Gotcha day is the anniversary of the day a rescue dog or rescue cat came home, or the day you first called them yours. It is a small, slightly made-up festival, and it is a good reason to put their face on a card. On Ottermagic you upload a clear photo of the animal, run Pet Swap, preview until the markings still look like your dog or cat, then print an A5 or send the e-card. Style Swap restyles a picture of the two of you together if that is the better frame. Start at Ottermagic.com.
This is a pet card. Human adoption announcements and family gotcha days sit in adoption announcement and gotcha day cards. Practical Pet Swap habits are in Pet Swap for dogs and cats. Christmas versions live in Christmas cards from the dog or cat.
What you are marking
Some people celebrate the day they collected the animal from the shelter. Some use the day a foster placement became permanent. Some pick the first night the cat came out from under the bed. You do not need a certificate. You need a date that means something in your house, and a photo you are happy to share.
The card can go to:
- the partner who did the night feeds of a terrified lurcher
- the friend who drove you to the rescue centre
- the kids, as a yearly "this is our dog" object
- yourself, on the fridge, because that is allowed
- a thank-you to a foster carer, if you are still in touch and they would like it
It is not a legal notice, a charity appeal, or a claim that Ottermagic is linked to any rescue organisation. Use your own photo. Do not put another family's foster animal on a card they did not ask for.
Pet Swap first, then the quieter styles
Pet Swap makes the animal the star of a template. It is built around one pet in the upload. If you have two rescue cats, make two cards, or Style Swap a photo where both faces are large and sharp.
Styles that tend to suit a gotcha day, rather than a joke at the animal's expense:
- Watercolour and Sketch when you want something you could keep
- Royal Portrait as a gentle joke: they arrived muddy, they sit like they pay rent
- Chibi and Clay 3D for a celebration that should feel like a party
- Classic Cartoon if the recipient likes a clear, friendly likeness
- Photobooth for a silly homecoming snap with a blanket and a paper crown
Leave Bobblehead and a harsh Caricature unless you are sure the joke is kind. Lucky Leprechaun is a people scene. Preview as if the rescue centre coordinator might see it.
Live styles: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.
Face Swap is for people in the same story, the human who did the collecting. A gotcha-day pair can be a Pet Swap of the animal plus a Style Swap of the person holding the lead, two envelopes. For Face Swap with more than one person, follow the live design and the preview; many templates want one face. See couple and family Face Swap.
Text Swap can put the pet's name and the year on the front if every photo is a blur, though a rescue household usually has at least one decent picture by month three.
Photos from the early days, and photos from now
Shelter identity photos can work if they are sharp and the eyes are visible. A Facebook screenshot of a screenshot will not. If the intake picture is grey and sad, you are allowed to use a recent sunny one instead. Gotcha day is about them being here, not about reliving the worst afternoon.
Dog tips: crouch, wait for the pause, light on a black face, contrast under a white one. Cat tips: daylight, patience, both eyes. Collars and rescue-centre bandanas are fine. A cone of shame is honest if that was the week, and also a lot to freeze on 330gsm gloss; preview twice.
You do not need a collage of "then and now". One photo per design is the Ottermagic path. Put the then-and-now story in the sentence inside.
What to write inside
Keep it specific and light on speech-making.
- "One year since you sat in the hallway and refused to move. We are glad you stayed. Love from us."
- "Gotcha day, 2026. Still your sofa. Still our favourite rescue. Happy anniversary, Mabel."
- "For the person who came with me to pick him up. Thank you. The dog says nothing, but he did not hide today."
- "Two years home. The cat has forgiven us, mostly."
- "We do not know your first year. We know this one. Happy gotcha day."
If the animal has died, this is the wrong temperature. Use the quieter memorial page, pet birthday and memorial cards, and a still style.
Print the inside message when you are sending a few copies (foster carer, grandparents, the friend with the spare key). Leave the A5 blank if the note should stay handwritten.
Christmas, or a date in April
Gotcha day is often not 25 December. If it falls in spring, send the card then. Photobooth snow is optional. Watercolour of a dog in a park is enough.
If you want a Christmas card of a rescue pet as well, that is a second card, or the same Pet Swap artwork with a festive inside line. Do not pretend December is the anniversary unless it is.
Print, e-card, wall art
UK printed cards are A5 folded (148×210mm), 330gsm gloss, envelope included, printed to order in the UK, posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days, recyclable stock, water-based inks.
The e-card is a hi-res, watermark-free download, useful if the foster carer lives far away and you want the file today. Posters and canvas of a Pet Swap portrait are a reasonable home keepsake; check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details. Christmas wall versions sit in pet portrait Christmas gifts 2026.
UK shop checkout is in pounds. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Preview as a guest; sign in at checkout.
US readers already use the phrase gotcha day. Make the Pet Swap from the same phone photo and send the e-card. The US shop (prices in dollars) sends the same printed A5 by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, untracked, so order about three weeks ahead. Use the UK shop if the printed A5 should land at a UK address.
Ready when you are
Mark the day they came home with a card that looks like them. Upload a clear photo, run Pet Swap in Watercolour, Sketch, Royal Portrait, Chibi, or Clay 3D, and keep the preview that still has their markings. Print an A5 330gsm gloss card with an envelope, hang a poster if you want the portrait in the hall, or send the e-card. Start at Ottermagic.com.
FAQ
What is a gotcha day card for a rescue dog or cat?
A card for the anniversary of them coming home. On Ottermagic it is usually a Pet Swap of a real photo, with a short inside note about the date.
Can I use the shelter photo?
If it is sharp and the face is clear. If it is a dim photocopy, use a recent picture. The anniversary is about now as much as then.
Can two rescue pets share one card?
Pet Swap is one animal per upload. Style Swap can restyle a photo where both faces are large. Otherwise, two cards.
Is this the same as an adoption announcement?
No. The adoption announcement guide is for people, with extra privacy care. This page is for the rescue pet's yearly "you are ours" card.
