Foster carer, IVF and rainbow baby Face Swap and Style Swap cards

Some cards need a slower front than a birthday gag. If you are thanking a foster carer, sitting with someone through IVF, or celebrating a rainbow baby, Ottermagic can still help when a photo is welcome. Upload a picture they are happy to see of themselves (or of the child, only with real care), choose a gentler Style Swap such as Sketch, Watercolour or Royal Portrait, or Face Swap only if the scene is kind, then order a printed A5 (148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included; Royal Mail around 3–5 working days in the UK, airmail around 2–3 weeks to US addresses) or an e-card: a hi-res, watermark-free download. Ottermagic is not a charity, a clinic, or a fostering agency, and this page is not medical or legal advice. Start at Ottermagic.com.

Shared manners

The mechanism is the same as any Ottermagic card: photo → Style Swap, Face Swap, or Pet Swap → preview → print or e-card. Text Swap if a face on the front would be wrong.

The manners are stricter.

  • Ask yourself whether this person wants their face on a greetings card at all.
  • Prefer styles that could sit on a shelf in a quiet room: Sketch, Watercolour, Royal Portrait, a calm Cartoon. Leave Bobblehead, Lucky Leprechaun, and loud Caricature for other weeks, unless you know they would laugh.
  • Do not write clinical details on the front. Appointments, drug names, and case numbers do not belong there.
  • Children in care: extra caution. A photo of a fostered child should only be used if you have a clear, appropriate reason and it would not cause harm if the card were seen. When unsure, make the card about the carer, or use Text Swap.

Live styles: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

Printed cards: A5 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope, blank inside or printed message, made to order in the UK, posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses (around 3–5 working days) or sent by airmail to US addresses (around 2–3 weeks), recyclable stock, water-based inks. Posters and canvas are available; check Ottermagic.com. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.

Foster carer and foster parent

Thank-you cards, “you got us through this year”, and sometimes a celebration when a household grows. The carer is often exhausted and under-thanked.

A Style Swap portrait of the adult (or adults) is usually the kindest subject. Pet Swap works when the family dog is part of how children settle. Face Swap into a costume scene is rarely the right thank-you.

Inside: name something specific you are allowed to name. “Thank you for the lifts to contact.” “The house felt safer because of you.” Avoid retelling a child’s history. Avoid legal commentary about orders, adoption timelines, or “you should claim more support”. If they need advice, that is for their social worker, an agency, or a qualified adviser, not a card shop.

If several people will sign, leave the inside blank and pass the physical A5. Ottermagic has no group-signing product.

IVF journey

IVF cards go to a partner, a friend in treatment, or someone marking a transfer day, a wait, or a later celebration. Outcomes differ. Do not write as if a card changes results. Do not promise that a Style Swap “manifests” a baby. That language is unkind and untrue.

For someone still in treatment, a quiet portrait of them (or of the couple, if a joint photo previews well) in Sketch or Watercolour can say “I am here” without demanding a grin. Photobooth and party Face Swap can wait until they ask for loud.

If they have asked not to talk about it, do not send a themed card. Text them a normal hello instead.

Inside: “Thinking of you this week.” “No need to reply.” Offer a concrete bit of help if you mean it (food, a lift). Skip lecture-y positivity.

US friends: a printed A5 takes around 2–3 weeks by airmail, which is too slow for a clinic week. Take the e-card, then print locally if paper would help.

Rainbow baby

A rainbow baby is a child born after miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. The joy is real. So is the grief that sits beside it. A card can hold both if you let it be small.

Use a photo the parents want public in an envelope. A Style Swap in Watercolour or Sketch of the baby, or of the family, can become a keepsake. Face Swap gags are almost always the wrong register. Chibi can work for some families who already use that tone; it can feel twee to others. Preview, then be honest.

Do not imply the new baby replaces anyone. Do not invent medical claims about why loss happened or why this pregnancy continued. Ottermagic does not partner with any baby-loss charity. If you want to support a charity, donate through their own page.

If you are writing after a loss with no baby to celebrate, this article is not asking you to Style Swap a grief. Sympathy cards, including quiet Text Swap or a non-photo card, may be kinder. See also the get-well and sympathy notes elsewhere on Ottermagic’s article set; the same caution applies.

Photo choices when the week is tender

  • Use a picture they already like.
  • IVF: a photo from before they look worn out, if they prefer to be seen that way, or a current one if they want to be recognised as they are. Ask.
  • Foster: the carer’s face, not a child you cannot thoughtfully include.
  • Rainbow: only with the family’s comfort.

Light and a visible face still matter. Kindness does not fix a blurry upload.

Ready when you are

Pick the manners first, then the swap. Sketch, Watercolour, or a still Pet Swap will carry most of these cards. Preview until it feels like a decent human sent it. Print an A5 330gsm gloss card with an envelope, download an e-card if time is short, or take a poster or canvas when the artwork should stay. Ottermagic.com. FAQ

Can I make a foster carer thank-you on Ottermagic?

Yes. Style Swap of the carer is a solid default. Be careful with photos of children. Ottermagic is not a fostering service and offers no legal advice.

Should I send an IVF Face Swap?

Only if they would find a scene comforting. Many people prefer a quiet Style Swap, or no likeness. Never treat the card as treatment.

What is a rainbow baby card?

A congratulations or keepsake card after a baby arrives following loss. Keep the tone gentle.

How fast can a printed card arrive in the UK?

Around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail. Use the e-card when that is too slow.

Can I leave the inside blank?

Yes. Blank inside or a printed message. Handwriting is often right here.

Do posters exist for a family portrait?

Yes. Posters and canvas are available. Check Ottermagic.com for current sizes and fulfilment.
