You want the card to look like this baby, not a stock illustration of A Baby. On Ottermagic you upload a clear picture, run Style Swap into a named look or Face Swap into a scene if the face is big enough, preview until the cheeks and the eyes feel right, then order a printed A5 card for a UK or US address or take the e-card (a hi-res, watermark-free download). Start at Ottermagic.com.
First birthdays, twins birthdays, and the smaller milestones (sitting up, first Christmas as a family, the tooth that finally appeared) all use the same path. The photo is the hard part, because babies wriggle and twins rarely face the same way.
First birthday
One is a proper occasion and a slightly chaotic photoshoot. Cake smash pictures are charming and often useless: icing on the lens, a smear where a mouth should be, yellow indoor light. Take a second picture before the cake, by a window, baby looking toward the phone. You can still write about the cake inside.
Style Swap is the kinder first try. Chibi, Cartoon, Watercolour, Sketch, Photobooth, and Clay 3D can keep a baby looking like a baby. Royal Portrait is the joke grandparents already make. Brick and Pixel Art are fine if that is your house. Caricature and Bobblehead can look older or harsher than you meant; preview before you commit.
Face Swap needs a face you could crop to a square. Newborns curled into a chest often fail because you mostly see forehead and knitted hat. A sitting baby with both eyes open is a better Face Swap input. Lucky Leprechaun-style scenes are costume-led; use them if your family likes that energy on a one-year-old, and skip them if you want something you would still put in a box of keepsakes.
Text Swap can say "Happy 1st, Nora" when every photo is a blur. If you have one sharp frame, use it.
Inside messages can stay short. "One!" plus a line from the person who could not be in the room is enough. A printed inside message is optional; the A5 can stay blank for handwriting at the party.
Early milestones that are not the first birthday
People send cards for coming home, for a naming day, for "we survived the first month," and for the first time the baby is the Christmas card. Ottermagic does not need a special milestone SKU for that. You need a photo from this week, not the hospital tag picture unless that is the one they love.
Get-well and sympathy are different jobs; keep those quieter (Sketch, Watercolour) and read the room. A first-tooth Cartoon is a different temperature from a hard week.
Pet Swap belongs when the resident cat has just noticed the baby, or when the card is "from" the dog. Photograph the animal on its own if the joint picture is a furry blur.
Posters and canvas are available if the Style Swap is something you would hang above a changing table. Check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details. Plenty of people order the A5 for the grandparents and keep a file via the e-card for themselves.
Twins
Twins cards go wrong when you pretend one crop can always hold two moving faces.
Style Swap of a photo where both faces are similar in size, both in focus, and both lit, is the first thing to try. Sit them together near a window. Take a burst. Pick the frame where both eyes are open, even if a hand is slightly in the way.
Face Swap is often one face per design unless the live template clearly asks for more. The preview is the authority. If a design is built for one face, make two coordinating cards (same style, two previews, two insides) or put both twins on a Style Swap and skip Face Swap.
Names matter. Write both, in the order the family uses, with the spellings on the birth certificate. Text Swap can carry two names on a name-led design if the photo will not cooperate.
Identical twins still need a picture that is actually them, not a stock stand-in. Fraternal twins in one frame should be large enough that neither becomes a background shape.
If one twin has a birthday card and the other does not, make the second card. Coordinating A5s in the same style look considered. One shared Style Swap looks considered too, when the photo is good.
Photographing babies without a studio
Daylight. Face toward the window. Camera at their eye level, which means you sit on the floor.
Hats and mittens hide the features Face Swap needs. A single bow that does not cover an eye is fine.
Avoid another phone as the only light. Avoid screenshots of a video call with grandparents unless the face is large and still.
Permission is simple here: a parent should be happy for this picture to become a card. Close-ups that would feel odd on a fridge are the wrong file, even if they are sharp.
US families: take the same kind of photo.
Print, timing, and the e-card
Printed cards: A5, 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, printed to order in the UK, recyclable stock, water-based inks. Royal Mail to UK addresses takes around 3–5 working days; airmail to US addresses takes around 2–3 weeks.
First birthdays are often organised late. If the party is this weekend, take the e-card and print it at home or show it on a phone while the posted card follows for the grandparents who keep paper.
Checkout is in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).
Live styles you can wander through: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.
Ready when you are
Make the first-birthday, twins, or milestone card from a photo where you can see their face. Upload it, try Style Swap (and Face Swap if the crop is clean), and keep the preview a parent would put on the fridge. Order a printed A5 330gsm gloss card with an envelope, order a poster or canvas, or take the e-card when you need the file now. Start at Ottermagic.com.
FAQ
Can I Face Swap a newborn?
You can try if the face is visible and reasonably face-on. Many newborn photos are too small, too dim, or mostly hat. Style Swap on a slightly wider, brighter picture is often the better first preview.
Do you have a special twins Face Swap?
Use the live designs and the preview. If a template wants one face, make two cards or use Style Swap on a photo of both.
What if every photo is blurry?
Retake by a window, burst mode, before the cake. If you still have nothing, Text Swap can carry the names. A sharp photo next week can become a late card; first-birthday cards still get kept.
Can grandparents in the US get a printed card?
Yes. The US shop sends the same A5 by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. If the birthday is sooner than that, send the e-card file or print it locally.
Will a printed card arrive in time for the party?
Royal Mail on a printed-to-order A5 is typically around 3–5 working days in the UK; airmail to a US address is around 2–3 weeks. If that looks tight, take the e-card for the day and post an A5 for the keepsake pile.
