You forgot someone, or the last posting date went by while the card was still a thought. It is fine to send something anyway. A late Christmas card is warmer than a January silence. On Ottermagic you can still put their face on the front: upload a photo, run Face Swap, Style Swap, or Pet Swap, preview, then send the e-card on the day, or post a printed A5 that arrives after Christmas as a small surprise. Start at Ottermagic.com.
Is it rude to send a Christmas card after Christmas?
No. People who like you would rather have a late card than a tidy excuse. The rude version is pretending you posted it on the 10th. Write that it is late. Then say the thing you meant in December.
A New Year card is the better wrapper when:
- they have already taken the tree down, and you know they are fussy about seasons
- you missed them on purpose because something hard happened, and January is when you can speak
- the message is really “hope 2027 is kinder,” which sits oddly under holly
If they still have cards on the mantel on the 28th, a Christmas front is allowed. Many households leave them up until Twelfth Night. A Face Swap of the two of you does not expire at midnight on the 25th.

Royal Mail last posting dates, Christmas 2026
Royal Mail publishes last recommended posting dates each year. On royalmail.com/christmas/last-posting-dates (checked 16 October 2026), the inland dates for Christmas 2026 are:
| Last posting date (Royal Mail) | Service |
|---|---|
| Friday 18 December | 2nd Class |
| Saturday 19 December | Tracked 48 |
| Monday 21 December | 1st Class and Tracked 24 |
| Wednesday 23 December | Special Delivery |
Royal Mail says these can change, and they ask you to post early. Confirm on their page when you actually buy stamps.
Ottermagic cards are printed to order first, then posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days. Count that print window on top of Royal Mail’s dates. Ottermagic does not publish a separate last-order Tuesday. If you are inside that combined window, take the e-card.
Printed A5 facts, for when paper still makes sense: 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, recyclable stock, water-based inks. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.
The e-card on the day
Christmas morning, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve: the e-card is the honest object. It is a hi-res, watermark-free download after payment. You send it by email or message. They open it while the kettle boils.
Use a recent photo. Photobooth and Cartoon feel festive without pretending the post ran. Watercolour and Sketch feel calmer if the delay was a hard month. Pet Swap if the apology is really from the dog.
For US recipients, the printed A5 goes by airmail and takes around 2–3 weeks, so a late card will land well into January. Post it if that suits them; otherwise send the e-card. For family in another country, the e-card reaches them the moment you pay.
A printed A5 that arrives after Christmas
Paper still has a job in late December. It lands when the recycling bag is already out, which can feel like someone thought of you after the rush. Write inside that you missed the post and wanted them to have a real card anyway.
Send it to you if you will see them in the first week of January. Send-to-them if their door is the point. Either way, allow the usual around 3–5 working days after you pay, or around 2–3 weeks for a US address.
A New Year or Hogmanay Style Swap is a clean relabel if holly would look stranded. See New Year and Hogmanay cards.
Text Swap works when you have no photo and you need “Sorry this is late, Priya” on the front. If you have a picture, use it.
Message ideas for late cards
Keep the first line true.
“This is late. I still wanted you to have a proper card.”
“I missed the last posting date and I am not going to pretend I did not.”
“Happy Christmas, arriving in its own time, like me.”
“Opening this after the 25th is allowed. So is eating the chocolates for breakfast.”
“I made your face in Watercolour in January because December got away from me. Love you.”
For someone you forgot completely: “You were on the list in my head. The envelope did not keep up. Here is the card I meant.”
For a New Year rewrite: “Belated Christmas, early New Year, same people. Hope January is quieter.”
Do not pile on jokes about being a terrible friend unless you are actually close enough for that. One apology, then the usual warmth.
What to put on the front
Late does not mean slapdash. The front is still the gift.
- Face Swap of the two of you, if the whole point is “I see you”
- Style Swap of a family photo from this year, even if the jumpers are in a heap
- Pet Swap if they would rather see the cat than your guilt
- Sketch or Watercolour if the household had a thin year
- Retro Halftone if you only have an old snap and it would look sad as a straight reprint
Live styles, if you want to browse: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.
Posters and canvas remain available if a late card turns into a hangable present. Check Ottermagic.com. Do not treat wall art as something you have to buy elsewhere because you missed the 18th.
Ready when you are
Send the card you meant, even if the calendar moved. Upload a photo, run Face Swap, Style Swap, or Pet Swap, and take the e-card today or a printed A5 that arrives when it arrives. Start at Ottermagic.com. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).
FAQ
Is a belated Christmas card worse than nothing?
Nothing is worse. A short, honest late card is ordinary human behaviour. Most people keep it.
Should I wait and send a birthday card instead?
Only if their birthday is close and you know they would rather have one object. Otherwise send the late Christmas (or New Year) card and still do the birthday.
Can I put “sorry this is late” on the front?
Yes, with Text Swap, or inside with a photo front. A Face Swap plus an honest inside line is usually nicer than a headline of guilt.
Will a printed card still arrive in the first week of January?
Ottermagic print is around 3–5 working days after you pay, then Royal Mail. Bank holidays sit in that window. The e-card does not care about bank holidays.
What if I missed someone abroad?
Send the e-card. It reaches them the moment you pay, wherever they are, and the file is still their face in a named style. If they are in the US, the printed A5 can still go by airmail and arrive in January. For printed delivery to another country, email support@ottermagic.com.
