Some lists do not want “Merry Christmas” on the envelope. That can be a mixed family, a secular household, a Yule greeting, or simply a wish for light on the shortest day. The card can still look like your people, standing in actual winter. On Ottermagic you upload a photo from a frosty walk, a table of candles, or the garden in its bare month, run Style Swap (or Face Swap, or Pet Swap for a snowy dog), preview until it feels like your winter, then order a printed A5 or send the e-card.
Inclusive holiday wording that still sits near Christmas, such as Happy Holidays and Season’s Greetings, lives in Happy Holidays and Season's Greetings Style Swap cards. This page is for senders who want the season without that Christmas frame.
The shortest day in 2026
In the Northern Hemisphere the December solstice is the shortest day. For 2026 it falls on Monday 21 December. The moment of the solstice is 8:50pm GMT (20:50 UTC), according to timeanddate.com and the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Most people treat the whole day as the occasion. You do not need to send the card at 8:50pm. You need it to arrive around then, or on a nearby evening when you actually see people.
Ottermagic is not an authority on anyone’s ritual. Yule, solstice gatherings, and “welcome back the light” mean different things in different homes. Use the wording your recipient already uses. Skip claims about what pagans, churches, or astronomers “should” do. The astronomy is a date. The card is a greeting.
Greeting lines that stay seasonal
Pick one and stop. You can handwrite the rest.
- “Happy Solstice.”
- “Happy Yule.”
- “Warm winter wishes.”
- “Welcome back the light.”
- “For the shortest day, from us, with extra soup.”
- “Thinking of you as the afternoons start to stretch again.”
US covering notes can say “Happy Solstice” or “warm winter wishes” in the same way. Personalized spelling is fine on an e-card. You do not need a theology paragraph.
If someone on the list celebrates Christmas and would be puzzled by solstice wording, send them the Christmas version instead. You are allowed to split the list.
Photos that read as winter, not as a nativity
Good inputs:
- A walk with visible faces, grey daylight, coats, a bit of mud
- Candles on a table you actually eat at (not a stock shrine)
- The garden, the park, a window with condensation, a dog in the first frost
- A household in knitwear without a tree, if that is how you live in December
Style Swap keeps the real scene and paints it. Face Swap is useful when you have a clear head-and-shoulders and you want them in a finished winter scene; check the template so it is not secretly Santa. Pet Swap wants the animal large in the frame. A distant bark-shaped blur will not become a snowy portrait.
Text Swap can put “Happy Solstice” on a designed front if every photo is a blur. If you have a picture, use it.

Styles that suit a quiet winter card
Watercolour: wet light, hedges, faces that still look like themselves.
Sketch: a walk, a window, a dog, without shouting.
Retro Halftone: older prints, or a slightly grainy phone snap from last January.
Classic Cartoon keeps likeness clear. Photobooth suits a close-up indoors. Royal Portrait is optional theatre if your household enjoys it. Clay 3D and Chibi can work for a playful Yule card to friends; preview before you send them to a colleague.
Leave Lucky Leprechaun and loud novelty Face Swap scenes unless that is already the in-joke. Caricature of someone in a woolly hat is a high-risk thank-you.
Live looks also include Brick, Emoji, Anime, Cartoon, Action Figure, Retro Game, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card. Tarot Card may appeal to some Yule senders; it may baffle others. Generate it. Keep it only if it still looks like them.
The snowy dog
Pet Swap of a dog (or cat) in frost, on a wet path, or asleep under a radiator is often the card people put on the fridge. Name the animal inside. “Happy Solstice from Iris, who approved the weather for exactly twelve minutes.”
Cartoon, Clay 3D, Sketch, and Watercolour are the usual pet starting points.
Printed cards, e-cards, and timing
Printed Ottermagic cards: A5 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or printed message, printed to order in the UK, recyclable stock and water-based inks. The UK shop posts with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days; the US shop sends by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. Work backwards from 21 December, then add that window, which means ordering about three weeks ahead for a US address. For how this overlaps with Christmas post if some of your list still gets a Christmas card, see Christmas posting deadlines.
The e-card is the path for last-minute solstice wishes, US addresses once the solstice is less than about three weeks away, family far away, and anyone who should see the portrait on the evening. Hi-res, watermark-free after payment.
Posters and canvas are available if the winter walk is one you would hang. Check live wall-art details on Ottermagic.com.
Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Checkout shows pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.
Ready when you are
Send a winter card that looks like your people and uses the words they already like. Upload a frosty walk, a candlelit table, or the dog in the garden, try Watercolour, Sketch, or Retro Halftone, and pay when the preview feels like the shortest day rather than a leftover Christmas design. Order a printed A5 (148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope; Royal Mail around 3–5 working days in the UK, airmail around 2–3 weeks to the US) or send the e-card. Start at Ottermagic.com.
