Watercolour, Sketch and Royal Portrait Christmas cards

If you want a Christmas card that looks drawn or painted rather than snapped, these three Ottermagic styles are the calm end of the list. Upload a clear photo, run Style Swap as Watercolour, Sketch, or Royal Portrait, preview until the likeness feels like them, then order a printed A5 card or take the e-card. Grandparents, a couple who would rather not be Bobbleheads, and a pet who deserves a proper portrait all sit well here. Start at Ottermagic.com.

The wider festive overview is Style Swap Christmas cards. Trend-led looks such as Photobooth sit in Christmas card trends 2026. This page is only the elegant trio.

How each style looks

Watercolour. Soft edges, colour that sits like paint, a little light in the face. It reads as a gift even when the photo was taken on a phone in the kitchen. Jumpers turn into washes. Gardens go gentle. It is kind to older faces and to pets with a lot of fluff, as long as the original is sharp. If your picture is already dark and grainy, Watercolour will not rescue it; retake it by a window.

Sketch. Pencil or ink energy: lines, less fill, a handmade feel. Good when you want the card to look considered without looking fancy. Family portraits with clear outlines do well. A busy patterned sofa may turn into noise; a plain wall helps. Sketch is the one to pick for a neighbour, a colleague you respect, or a parent who keeps things in frames.

Royal Portrait. A grand painted-portrait mood: the household as if someone had commissioned them. Funny when they are in hoodies. Sincere when the photo already has a bit of posture. Couples who would enjoy "this is us, taking ourselves slightly seriously" like it. It can overwhelm a very casual snapshot of someone mid-chew. Sit them up, face the camera, try again.

None of these is a filter you slap on in a camera app. Style Swap redraws the picture as that look, then places it on the card. Face Swap is a different tool (their face into a finished scene). Pet Swap stars the animal. You can still run a pet photo through Style Swap in Watercolour if you want the painterly version of the whole frame.

Text Swap remains available if you have no photo and want an elegant greeting with a name. If you have a photo, use it.

Which photos and people they suit

StylePhotos that behaveRecipients who tend to like it
WatercolourEven daylight, faces large, not too much clutter behindGrandparents, family portraits, fluffy pets, a couple who want something keepable
SketchClear outlines, simple background, sharp eyesParents, neighbours, colleagues, anyone who likes a quieter mantel
Royal PortraitUpright pose, face-on, a little space around the headCouples, a grandparent with a sense of humour, a pet you are willing to crown

A group works on Style Swap when every face is readable. Tiny faces at a long table will not become a good Royal Portrait. Take a closer frame.

Glasses are usually fine. Hats that hide eyebrows are not. Fairy lights in the eyes can flare; step away from the tree, then crop later if you need to.

More photo craft: how to choose a photo.

Grandparents, family, pets, a couple

Grandparents. Watercolour or Sketch of the grandchildren, or of the whole visit. The inside line can be short: "With love this Christmas. This is how we looked on Sunday." Avoid Caricature unless they have asked for chaos. They have seen enough chaos.

Family portraits. Sketch for a large group with clear faces. Watercolour if the family is small and the light is good. Royal Portrait if you are leaning into the joke of formality. Matching pyjamas survive Watercolour better than they survive Pixel Art.

Pets. Pet Swap can still use these looks when you want the animal as the subject of a template. Style Swap Watercolour of a cat in a window is a classic for a reason. A Royal Portrait of a hound in a collar will get put on the fridge. If you have several animals, get them in one photo; Pet Swap is one pet per upload. The new-puppy guide is puppy's first Christmas.

A couple. Royal Portrait if you both enjoy the theatre. Watercolour if you want something you could still hang in January. Sketch if one of you is allergic to fuss. Face Swap into a scene is optional and often less elegant than restyling the actual pair.

Partners who want a jokier card can peel off to husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend.

Other live styles (Brick, Chibi, Photobooth, Clay 3D, and the rest) are a different temperature. Use them when you want play.

Printed cards: A5 folded 148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order in the UK, posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3 to 5 working days or sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2 to 3 weeks, recyclable stock and water-based inks. Elegant fronts deserve that stock. Plan around the working-day window and Royal Mail's own holiday dates (posting deadlines); for a US address, allow about three weeks before Christmas.

The e-card is the hi-res, watermark-free download. Anyone late should use it, including US shoppers once Christmas is less than about three weeks away. A Sketch file printed locally still looks like a Sketch.

Posters and canvas are available in the same Watercolour, Sketch, or Royal Portrait as the card. That is often the real gift: the A5 goes in the post, the wall piece stays. Check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details.

Words that match a quiet front

  • With love this Christmas, and thanks for the steady years.
  • Season's greetings from our house. We thought you might like us in paint.
  • Merry Christmas. This is the grandest we have looked all year, which is saying little.
  • For you, in a softer light. Happy Christmas.
  • All our love. The likeness is the present; the jokes can wait until Boxing Day.

If the list is mixed-faith, Season's Greetings or Happy Holidays fit these styles well. See holiday wording.

FAQ

What is the best Royal Portrait Christmas card in 2026?

The best one is a preview of your actual people (or pet) that still looks like them. Ottermagic's Royal Portrait Style Swap is the path. Sit up, face the camera, and generate it.

Watercolour or Sketch for Nan?

If Nan likes colour and keeps watercolours on the wall, Watercolour. If she likes pencil drawings and quieter rooms, Sketch. You can make both previews.

Can I use these styles for a US holiday card?

Yes. The US shop sends the printed A5 by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, so allow about three weeks before the holidays; after that, take the e-card and print or send the file. The artwork is the same.

Do posters and canvas come in Watercolour too?

Yes, Ottermagic offers posters and canvas in the same styles as the cards. Confirm live details on the site.

What if I do not have a photo?

Text Swap will still put a name on a designed card. The elegant trio really wants a likeness, so take a picture if you can.
