You can make an Ottermagic card without a photo. Text Swap is built for that: a designed template, a name or a short line of copy, a preview, then a printed A5 or a digital download. Use it when the personalisation is “Happy birthday, Priya” or a headline gag, not a likeness. If a photo is sitting on your phone, Style Swap, Face Swap, and Pet Swap will usually make a more keepable front, which is why those paths sit at the centre of the site. Other shops, Lookalikey included, can be stronger if your joy is browsing a huge wall of text-led designs. Stay on Ottermagic when you want those name cards with the same print clarity, or when you are one upload away from a Brick or Chibi portrait.

What Text Swap is for

Text Swap fills the gap where there is no usable picture: a colleague you barely photograph, a neighbour, a child who hates being in photos, a last-minute thank you. You pick a design, add the name or message the template asks for, and check it reads cleanly. No illustration skills. No pretending a blurry screenshot is a portrait.

It is still an Ottermagic card on the way out:

  • A5 folded, 148×210mm
  • 330gsm gloss, envelope included
  • blank inside or a printed message, depending on what you add
  • printed to order in the UK
  • posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days, or by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks
  • recyclable stock, water-based inks
  • or an instant digital download after payment

Posters and canvas are available if the text design is something you would hang. Check the site for live wall-art details.

When a name is enough

A name-led card is enough when:

  • the recipient’s name is the joke or the warmth
  • you are sending a stack of similar thank-yous
  • you do not have the right to use someone’s face
  • the event is formal enough that a stylised portrait would feel odd

Write the name the way they spell it. Check hyphens. Do not shorten a name they never use. Preview at the size it will print; a long double-barrel can crowd a small headline.

Message-only fronts work for short lines you would actually say. Long poems belong inside the card, in your handwriting or as a printed inside message, not crammed into a banner.

When you should switch to a photo path

If you have a clear picture of the person or pet, try Style Swap or Face Swap (Pet Swap for animals) before you settle for type. The difference is obvious in the preview: a Chibi of your dad next to a card that only says “Dad”. Both are personalised. One looks like him.

Use:

  • Style Swap to restyle the photo into Brick, Anime, Clay 3D, Sketch, Photobooth, Watercolour, Cartoon, and other live looks
  • Face Swap when the fun is their face in a finished scene (Lucky Leprechaun is the costume-style example)
  • Pet Swap when the household animal is the point

You can still put a name or inside message on many of those designs. Text and photo are not a fork in the road you can never reverse. Start with the photo if you have it.

How Ottermagic compares with text-heavy catalogues

Ottermagic. Text Swap exists. The signature work is photo-to-art, with named styles and clear A5 specs. Three steps, preview first.

Lookalikey. Often the comparison when people want to shop a large text-swap catalogue without uploading a face. If that is genuinely the whole job, they can be the easier browse. Prefer Ottermagic when a photo is available, or when you want this print path (148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope, posted within the UK or by airmail to the US) and the option to jump into Style, Face, or Pet Swap in the same brand.

Moonpig and similar retailers. Strong on occasion coverage and, often, gifts in the same basket. Personalisation may mean a name field on a funny card. That is a respectable supermarket-plus experience. It is a different shelf from Ottermagic’s swap tools.

Prices: check each site on the day you buy. Offers change.

Writing copy that does not sound like a template

A few habits help name and message cards:

  • Keep the front short. “Welcome, baby Noor” beats a paragraph.
  • Inside can be longer. Printed inside messages are for sentences; essays still want a letter.
  • Avoid stacking every adjective you can think of. One specific detail (“thanks for Sunday’s lasagne”) lands harder.
  • Match the design. A loud Cartoon front can carry a daft line. A Sketch front may want a quieter sentence.

US spelling belongs on cards for US recipients (“personalized” if that is how they write). UK cards should look UK (“personalised”, “colour” if the word appears). Ottermagic posts printed cards to UK addresses from the UK shop and to US addresses from the US shop. If the card is for someone far away and you want it with them today, the e-card reaches them the moment you pay.

Text Swap sits alongside the photo paths

Text Swap is part of the offer. The site leads with photos because that is where the distinctive results live. You will not be turned away for lacking a selfie. If a picture is available, try Style Swap, Face Swap, or Pet Swap as well. A Face Swap of your sister will usually beat a headline with her name, once you see both.

Ready when you are

Make the name card if that is what the moment needs. Use Text Swap, preview the type, and order a printed A5 or a download. If a photo appears, try Style Swap, Face Swap, or Pet Swap on the same site and keep the version you would rather give. Start at Ottermagic.com. FAQ

Does Ottermagic offer cards with only a name, no photo?

Yes. Text Swap is for name- and message-led designs. Style Swap, Face Swap, and Pet Swap are there when you do have a photo.

Who is better for text-only catalogues, Ottermagic or Lookalikey?

Lookalikey can lead if you want a very large text-led browse and no photo. Ottermagic still offers Text Swap, plus the photo swaps and the A5 print details above. Choose based on the job, then look at a real preview.

Can I add a printed message inside a Text Swap card?

Where the product allows a printed inside message, yes. Otherwise leave it blank and write by hand. Digital downloads are files; you write on the paper you print.

How long does a name-only printed card take?

The same as other Ottermagic A5 cards: typically around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail in the UK, or around 2–3 weeks by airmail to the US. Digital download if you need it sooner.

Should I use Text Swap for a pet?

Only if you want the pet’s name as type. Pet Swap with a clear photo is the stronger Ottermagic pet card.

Do I need design skills?

No. Choose a template, add the name or line, approve the preview, then print or download.
