End of term is a pile of drawings, a Tesco bouquet, and a card that too often looks like everyone else’s. If you want the thank-you to look like them, Ottermagic is a kind way to do it. Upload a clear photo (the teacher in the playground, the childminder with a toddler, the nanny on a rainy Tuesday), run Style Swap or Face Swap, preview until it feels warm rather than like a joke at their expense, then order a UK A5 card (148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days) or an e-card if the last assembly is tomorrow. Ottermagic is not a school supplier and has no classroom partnership. It is a card you make at home. Start at Ottermagic.com.
Who this card is for
This is the July leaving card, the Christmas box for the key person, the nanny’s last Friday, the childminder who had your baby three days a week. Preschool, reception, secondary form tutors, teaching assistants, after-school club staff: same job. You are saying you noticed the work.
A photo-to-art front helps when a generic “best teacher” pun would bounce off. They still look like themselves, only in Sketch, Watercolour, Chibi, or a gentle Face Swap scene. Keep the tone grateful. Save Bobblehead and Lucky Leprechaun energy for people who have already laughed at themselves with you.
Ottermagic also has Pet Swap if the household hero is the dog who walked to the school gate, and Text Swap if you have no photo you are allowed to use. Photos of children on a card for an adult need care: use a picture you are happy to put in an envelope, and skip anything a school would not want on a staff-room fridge.
How to make one
- Pick Style Swap for “them, in a drawn look”, or Face Swap if a finished scene fits (and is affectionate, not mocking).
- Upload a well-lit face. Staff photos from a dim hall are often poor; a daytime portrait or a clear crop is kinder.
- Preview. If you wince, try Sketch or Watercolour. If it looks kind, keep it.
- Choose printed A5 when you have around 3–5 working days. Choose the e-card (hi-res, watermark-free download) when you do not.
- Leave the inside blank if the class will sign, or add a printed message if you are posting from another town.
Posters and canvas exist if a family wants the same portrait as a small gift for the staff room. Check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details.
Live styles to browse: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.
Matching the person, not the job title
Primary and secondary teachers. Sketch, Watercolour and Royal Portrait sit well on a desk. Cartoon or Photobooth can work for a tutor who already sends silly class photos home. Caricature is a risk unless you know their humour.
Nursery, preschool, childminders and nannies. Chibi and Cartoon often fit rooms full of peg labels; the card is still for the adult, so crop if a child steals the preview. Childminder and nanny relationships are smaller and often longer, so Sketch or Watercolour matches “you were our village” better than a costume Face Swap. Private jokes belong inside.
Teaching assistants, lunch staff, club leaders. They get fewer cards. A simple Style Swap and one specific sentence (“you always found her jumper”) will do more than a loud template.
There is no official Ottermagic “school range”. You pick from the same live styles as a birthday card, with better manners.
Photo rules that keep it decent
- Prefer a photo of the adult you are thanking, taken with their knowledge or already used on a class blog they are comfortable with.
- Children: if you include a child, it should be your child, in a picture you would happily post to grandparents, not a class group you do not have permission to spread.
- Face the light. Winter term photos from 3.30pm in the cloakroom will fight Face Swap.
- Glasses are fine when you can see the eyes.
- One face in the crop. A whole class panorama is a poor Face Swap input.
If you have no fair photo, use Text Swap for their name and “Thank you”, and write the real letter inside.
Print timing for end of term
UK printed cards are made to order and posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days. Count working days, not “the last Friday of July feels ages away”. Inset days and bank holidays sit in that window more often than you remember.
| Situation | Format |
|---|---|
| You can wait ~3–5 working days | Printed A5, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or printed message |
| Last-day panic | E-card download, print at home or send the image with a message |
| A gift that stays on a wall | Poster or canvas (confirm live options) plus a card if you like |
| No usable photo | Text Swap, same print vs e-card choice |
Recyclable stock and water-based inks apply to the printed card path. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.
What to write inside
Keep it specific and short.
Good: “Thank you for teaching Maya to love library day.” “You made settling-in weeks bearable.” “We will miss your texts about forgotten wellies.”
Less good: a paragraph about how teaching is a vocation. They already know. Name the child. Name one habit you noticed. If the whole class is signing, leave space. A printed inside message from one family can sit above the signatures if you keep it to a few lines.
You can still buy biscuits. The card does a different job.
Style Swap vs Face Swap vs a shop-rack thank-you
A shop-rack card is fast and anonymous. A photo-in-a-frame template looks like them and still looks like a printout. Style Swap makes them drawn, painted, clay or brick, which is easier to keep. Face Swap puts them in a scene: use it when the scene is warm, and skip it when it turns a tired Year 6 teacher into a punchline. Other sites may have deeper “best teacher” headline catalogues via text. Text Swap exists on Ottermagic if that is all you need; Style and Face Swap are why most people should upload a picture.
Ready when you are
Make the thank-you look like the person who did the work. Upload a careful photo, try Sketch, Watercolour, Chibi or a gentle Face Swap, and keep the preview you would be happy to hand over in the playground. Print UK A5 (148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope, Royal Mail around 3–5 working days), take an e-card if term ends sooner, or look at posters and canvas. Start at Ottermagic.com. FAQ
Can I make a teacher thank-you card from a photo on Ottermagic?
Yes. Style Swap and Face Swap are the usual paths. Preview until it feels like a thank-you, then order printed A5 or an e-card. There is no school partnership to join; you are an ordinary customer.
Is Face Swap appropriate for a nursery key person?
It can be, if the scene is kind and the photo is fair. If you are unsure, Style Swap in Sketch or Watercolour is the safer front.
How early should I order for the last day of term?
Allow around 3–5 working days for Royal Mail on a printed A5. If you are inside that window, use the e-card.
Can the class all sign one Ottermagic card?
Ottermagic does not provide a shared online signing link. Order a printed A5 with a blank inside and pass it around, or print the e-card file and sign that. Digital group-signing sites are a separate product.
What if I only know their first name?
Text Swap can put the name on the front. A photo, if you have a decent one, will still make a more keepable card.
Can I send this to a childminder in another city?
Printed A5 posts to UK addresses in the usual window. For something today, send the e-card file.
