Some people want holly. Some people want the household redrawn as a handheld game screen, a bright emoji portrait, or a dotted pop-art print. On Ottermagic those are live Style Swap looks: Retro Game, Emoji, and Retro Halftone. Upload a clear photo, preview until you still recognise them, then order a printed A5 or take the e-card. Start at Ottermagic.com.
The wider 2026 mood board is Christmas card trends 2026. Emoji as a year-round look is Emoji style personalised cards. Style Swap Christmas cards covers the whole festive Style Swap path. This page is the three punchy looks together, for gamers, kids, and anyone who likes print-shop colour.
What each look actually does
Style Swap restyles your photograph. You are not dropping a sticker on a template. You are asking the card to keep their face and posture, in a named treatment.
Retro Game reads like a chunky pixel scene: block colour, simple shading, the feeling of an old arcade cabinet or a handheld from a cupboard. Good for people who still talk about high scores, kids who think everything should look like a sprite, and Secret Santa desks. It is not a licensed title. Do not put someone else’s character name on the inside.
Emoji is a graphic, simple portrait with the energy of a well-drawn chat sticker, still recognisably them. Kids clock it immediately. Adults who live in group chats do too. Christmas works if the photo is bright and face-on; the style already supplies the cheer.
Retro Halftone is dots and newsprint texture, closer to a Sunday supplement or a pop-art poster than a cartoon. Older family photos, slightly grainy party snaps, and anyone who would hang a print in a hallway all sit well here. It is the quietest of the three, which is useful for in-laws who do not want to be a sprite.
The rest of the live list is there if the first preview is wrong: Brick, Chibi, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun. Pixel Art is a cousin of Retro Game if you want even flatter tiles. Photobooth is the other nostalgic path.
Face Swap puts them in a finished scene instead. Pet Swap is the animal path; Retro Game on a dog is a gift. Text Swap covers a name-only front if you have no photo.
Printed cards: A5 folded 148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order in the UK, posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days or sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, recyclable stock and water-based inks. The e-card is a hi-res, watermark-free download. Posters and canvas are available if you want the same art on a gamer’s wall; check Ottermagic.com for current sizes. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.
US shoppers: same Style Swap, then the printed card by airmail (allow about three weeks before Christmas) or the e-card, personalized, sent by text or email, printable at home.
Which photos suit which look
Retro Game: a single person or a tight pair, decent light, face not swallowed by a hood. Side profiles are harder. A Christmas jumper helps if the pattern is simple; tiny Fair Isle can turn to noise. Kids holding a controller are fine if you can still see eyes. Do not use a screenshot of a game. Use a person.
Emoji: face-on, recent, not wearing sunglasses. Party hats are optional; if they hide the forehead, crop or retake. Group photos with five heads often flatten. Two people is safer. Pets can go through Pet Swap or Style Swap in Emoji; whiskers need to stay.
Retro Halftone: this one forgives older prints and indoor yellow light, because the dots already look like paper. A tiny thumbnail will not magically grow detail. If the original is sharp, Halftone still works; it just looks more designed.
Try all three from the same upload if you cannot decide. Keep the preview you would actually put on a mantel. That is the whole method.
Message ideas with a light wink
For Retro Game: “Player two has entered the living room.” “High score: you, again.” “Insert coin, eat roast, fall asleep on the sofa.” “This is your Christmas character select. I picked you.”
For Emoji: “This is your official festive face.” “Sending this instead of 47 stickers.” “Same grin, slightly more yellow, still you.”
For Retro Halftone: “You, in dots.” “Newsflash: it is still Christmas.” “Printed like a poster, sent like a card.”
Keep licensed worlds out of it. No named consoles, no named titles, no borrowed heroes. The look is enough.
Pet Swap in Retro Game
Dogs in Retro Game look like they wandered out of a side-scrolling garden. Cats look like they always meant to be tiles. Use a photo with the whole animal and a plain background if you can. Hats that hide eyes still fail, even in pixels.
The inside line can be from the pet: “I ate the wrapping. I regret nothing.” Or from you: “He is the only one who understands the loading screen that is December.”
If Retro Game feels too loud for a memorial pet card, switch to Sketch or Watercolour. Playful looks are for living chaos.
A poster or canvas for a gamer’s room
The same Retro Game or Retro Halftone preview can be a poster or canvas if you would walk past it every day. Availability only: check Ottermagic.com. Do not copy the A5 3–5 working day window onto wall art.
A desk-facing Retro Game portrait of them (or the dog) is a Christmas gift that does not need a disc in a plastic case. Emoji at large size is punchy; stand back from the preview. Halftone is the one that already wants to be a print.
Ottermagic offers posters and canvas. You do not need a separate pop-art shop for the hangable copy. Matching card plus wall piece: card, poster and canvas gift sets.
Ready when you are
Give them a Christmas card that looks like a game screen, an emoji portrait, or a dotted print of their actual face. Upload a photo, run Style Swap in Retro Game, Emoji, or Retro Halftone, and take a printed A5 or the e-card when it clicks. Start at Ottermagic.com. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).
FAQ
Can I make an 8-bit Christmas card from a photo?
Retro Game (and Pixel Art next door) is the Ottermagic version of that mood. Upload a person or pet, preview, print A5 or take the e-card. No licensed game art.
Is Emoji only for kids?
No. Kids love it. Plenty of adults do, especially if their texts already look like that. Watercolour exists if they would hate it.
What is the difference between Retro Halftone and Photobooth?
Halftone is print dots and poster texture. Photobooth is strip-and-flash nostalgia. Both are live. Try both on the same party snap.
Can US friends get these?
Yes. The printed card goes by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, or send the e-card and they can print it at home. Personalized the same way as the UK card.
Can I put this on a wall as well as a card?
Yes. Posters and canvas are available from the same artwork. Check Ottermagic.com for live options.
