If you want to thank an NHS nurse, doctor, midwife, or other healthcare worker with a card that looks like them, Ottermagic can help. Upload a clear photo they would be happy to see, run Style Swap or a gentle Face Swap, preview until it feels warm rather than gimmicky, then order a UK A5 card (148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days) or an e-card if the last shift is this week. This is a personal thank-you from you. It is not an official NHS product, partnership, or endorsement. Start at Ottermagic.com.

Say thank you because they looked after someone you love, or because they looked after you. Keep the card about that. Avoid dressing it up as a campaign.

What this card is, and what it is not

Ottermagic is a greetings-card shop. You buy a personalised design and you send it. Ottermagic does not speak for any trust, ward, or union.

That still leaves a good job: a keepable thank-you that looks like the person you mean, instead of a generic "to the NHS" poster with no face.

How it works: upload a photo → Style Swap, Face Swap, or Pet Swap if a ward pet or home pet is part of the story → preview → printed A5 or e-card. Text Swap is available if a photo would be awkward.

Good to know: you see the preview before you pay. UK print is A5 folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order, recyclable stock, water-based inks. Typical post is around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.

Posters and canvas are available if a family wants the artwork at home. Check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details. Do not turn a thank-you into an unofficial plaque for a hospital corridor unless you have been asked.

Choosing a tone that will not embarrass them

Healthcare workers get a lot of public language that is louder than the tea-break they actually have. A card can be quieter.

Style Swap in Sketch, Watercolour, or Royal Portrait is a safe first try. They still look like themselves. The card does not shout.

Cartoon, Chibi, or Clay 3D can work if you know they like that humour, you have been on the ward long enough to know, or they posted a similar joke themselves. Do not guess "nurses love cartoons" as a rule.

Face Swap into a heroic scene is easy to overdo. Lucky Leprechaun and Action Figure energy belongs on a birthday, unless this particular person would cackle. If you wince at the preview, stop. Try Sketch.

Pet Swap is lovely when the thank-you is also about the dog who waited in the car park, or a staff member's well-known cat. It is a poor fit if you have never met their pet.

Live styles (pick with manners, not the loudest thumbnail): Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

Who the photo is of

The kindest photo is usually of the person you are thanking, taken with their knowledge, in ordinary clothes, looking at the camera. A snatched corridor picture can feel like surveillance even if you meant well.

If you do not have a decent photo, Text Swap a name and a short line, or write the whole thing by hand on a blank inside. Other UK shops have deep "thank you" catalogues if you want illustration with no likeness. That is a fair choice. Ottermagic is strongest when a welcome photo exists.

Do not upload a photo of a patient in a gown unless that person is you, or they asked you to. Thank-you cards for staff should not leak clinical detail.

Group thank-yous for a whole ward are hard in Face Swap, because you need a design that expects several faces. One Style Swap of a named nurse plus a message that mentions the team is often clearer than a crowded collage.

What to write inside

Keep it specific and short.

  • Their name, if you know it.
  • The month or the stay, without medical gossip.
  • One concrete thing they did ("you explained the next step without rushing").
  • How to reply, which is usually "no need to reply".

Blank inside is often right, so you can write in your own handwriting. A printed message is fine if your handwriting is a liability and the wording stays modest.

Avoid promising that the card will be shown to a charity, a newspaper, or "the whole NHS". You are sending a card to a person.

Timing and format

Shifts do not wait for Royal Mail. If they finish a run of nights this week, the e-card (a hi-res, watermark-free download) can be printed at home, emailed if they gave you an address, or handed as a folded print. If you have around 3–5 working days, the posted A5 with an envelope is a nicer object to keep in a locker or on a fridge.

Same artwork can become a poster or canvas for your own kitchen if the stay was long and the family wants a reminder of who helped. That is a home object. Confirm live poster and canvas options on Ottermagic.com.

There is no Ottermagic shop on a hospital concourse. Printed cards are made to order in the UK and posted with Royal Mail.

A few situations, plainly

You were a patient and you have a good photo from a fundraising page they already use. Style Swap in Sketch. Hand-deliver if you have an outpatient appointment.

You are thanking a GP or a community nurse. Same path. A quieter style usually fits clinic life better than Bobblehead.

You are a colleague leaving a card in the staff room. Ask before you put someone's face on a communal cake table. Some people hate it. Text Swap or a group-signed blank card may be kinder.

You want to thank "the NHS" as a whole. A personalised face card is the wrong tool. Write to the ward manager, use the trust's own thanks process if they publish one, or send biscuits. Use Ottermagic when there is a person and a photo.

Ready when you are

Choose a photo they would not mind, try a gentle Style Swap, and read the preview the way they will: on a break, with colleagues nearby. If it feels kind, print UK A5 330gsm gloss with an envelope, or download the e-card. Start at Ottermagic.com. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).

FAQ

Is this an official NHS card?

No. Ottermagic is an independent shop. There is no NHS partnership. You are sending a personal thank-you.

Can I put an NHS logo on the card?

Do not add official marks you do not have permission to use. Use a photo and a style, plus your own words inside.

What if I only met them once?

A short handwritten card with no Face Swap may be enough. Style Swap of a consented photo is for when you have a picture and a real reason.

How fast will a printed thank-you arrive in the UK?

Around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail, as a typical window. Use the e-card when that is too slow.

Can I order a poster of the nurse for the ward?

Only if the ward has asked for it. Posters and canvas are available on Ottermagic for customers; hospital display is a permission question, not a product feature.

Do you offer Text Swap if I have no photo?

Yes. Text Swap covers a name or message. Style Swap, Face Swap, and Pet Swap remain the likeness paths when a photo is welcome.
