A Kwanzaa or Juneteenth card works when it looks like your people, in a style they would keep, with a greeting you would actually say. On Ottermagic you upload a clear photo, run Style Swap or Face Swap (or Pet Swap if the household animal belongs in the picture), preview until the likeness feels kind, then choose a printed A5 (148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope), sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, or the e-card: a hi-res, watermark-free download you can print locally or send on a phone. Kwanzaa and Juneteenth are not interchangeable “culture holidays”. They sit on different calendars and carry different histories. A personalized card cannot do the work of a gathering. It can carry a face you love, without dressing someone as a symbol.
Two occasions, two tones
Kwanzaa runs from 26 December to 1 January. Many African American families mark the seven days with the kinara, the mkeka, gifts of meaning, and the Nguzo Saba (the seven principles). Cards go to hosts, to children, and to friends who celebrate with you. The mood is often home-centred and deliberate.
Juneteenth is 19 June. It commemorates the 1865 announcement in Galveston that enslaved people in Texas were free, and it is now a US federal holiday. Households mark it with cookouts, readings, music, rest, and community events. Cards are less of a stationery habit than Christmas, which is why a photo card can feel personal. It can also feel clumsy if you treat the day as a costume theme.
Write the greeting the way that family writes it. Ask if you are sending into a household that is not yours. “Happy Kwanzaa” and “Happy Juneteenth” are enough when you do not have a longer phrase you use out loud.
Kwanzaa: photo first, principles in the message
You do not need a template that tries to illustrate every principle. Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba, and Imani are better as words inside the card, or as a sentence you mean, than as clip-art on someone’s face.
A good upload is a well-lit photo of the people at the table, or of one person in clothes they chose. Indoor December lighting can be yellow and dim. Turn a lamp on. Get eyes visible. Then try Style Swap looks that sit with a home celebration:
- Watercolour and Sketch when the evening is quiet
- Photobooth and Cartoon for a lively family shot
- Chibi or Anime for children, if that is how you already send pictures
- Royal Portrait if they will enjoy a formal, slightly grand take
- Clay 3D or Brick only when that is genuinely their taste, not a stereotype of “playful culture”
Face Swap is optional. Use it for a clearly playful, non-sacred scene you would show them in person. Do not drop a face onto a prophet, a freedom-fighter portrait used as a gag, or a costume that reduces the week to a party hat. Lucky Leprechaun energy belongs on other dates.
Pet Swap is fair in houses where the cat sits through every candle lighting. Skip it if you are unsure.
Text Swap can carry a name and “Habari gani” or a principle if you have no photo. Large text-led catalogues may have more ready-made headlines. When you do have a picture, Style Swap is the reason to use Ottermagic.
Juneteenth: warmth without a costume
Juneteenth cards among family and friends are often a simple hello for the day, a thank-you to a host, or a note to someone far away. The photo should be of living people you know, not a historical tableau with their head pasted on.
Style ideas that tend to stay decent:
- Sketch or Watercolour for a card that can sit on a table without shouting
- Photobooth for cousins and backyard gatherings
- Cartoon or Classic Cartoon when the household already sends funny pictures
- Action Figure or Retro Game only if that is their ordinary humour, on any Saturday
Avoid treating red, black, and green as a filter you force onto a face. Colour can live in clothes they already wore. Avoid Face Swap into plantation, chain, or “escaped captive” scenes. That is not wit. If you want a scene, pick one that is clearly a celebration portrait, and still look at the preview as if they were standing next to you.
A cookout photo is often a bad upload: hats, smoke, backlight. Step someone into shade for ten seconds if you can. The day can be joyful. The file still needs a readable face.
Printing and styles
Order the printed A5 about three weeks ahead and it arrives by airmail with an envelope. Closer to the day, buy the e-card, then print at a local counter or at home, or send the image.
Live styles on Ottermagic are Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, and Lucky Leprechaun. Pick for the person.
Kwanzaa and Juneteenth are not interchangeable with Independence Day, or with a generic “diversity card” aisle.

FAQ
Can I make a Kwanzaa card without a kinara in the artwork?
Yes. A Style Swap of the people you celebrate with is often clearer than hunting for festival icons. The greeting can sit in the message.
Is Face Swap appropriate for Juneteenth?
It can be, when the scene is a celebration portrait and you know the recipient. Skip anything that turns a person into a historical trauma image or a mascot.
Do you ship printed Juneteenth cards in the US?
Yes. The printed A5 goes by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, so order about three weeks before 19 June. Closer than that, buy the e-card and print or send it in the US.
What should I write inside?
A short line you would say at the door. If you are not sure of the greeting, ask someone in the family rather than copying a long paragraph you would never speak.
Can I include a pet?
Yes, via Pet Swap, when the animal is part of the household’s day. Use a clear photo with the face and ears visible.
