A coming-of-age birthday card should look like the person having the year, not like a generic “sweet sixteen” balloon pack. On Ottermagic you upload a recent photo, run Style Swap or Face Swap, preview until you recognise them, then order the printed A5, sent by airmail to a US address in around 2–3 weeks, or buy the e-card: a hi-res, watermark-free download you can print locally or send the same day. Start at Ottermagic.com.

A quinceañera and a Sweet 16 are not the same party. One is a fifteenth-birthday tradition with roots in many Latin American families, often with a Mass or blessing, a court, and a formal reception. The other is a US sixteenth-birthday milestone that can be a sleepover or a hall. Use the word the family uses. Search will also show quinceanera without the ñ; write Quinceañera on the card if that is how they spell it.

Two different birthdays

Quinceañera (quince años). Cards go to her, to parents, and sometimes to the chambelanes or damas you are thanking. The day can be faith-adjacent and very dressed up. A Style Swap of her in clothes she chose is usually better than a Face Swap into a princess costume she did not pick.

Sweet 16. Cards are birthday cards with extra weight. The photo should be current. Last year’s school picture can make a sixteen-year-old look twelve, which is an unkind front for this envelope.

You can use the same Ottermagic modes for both. The manners change.

Style Swap first

Style Swap redraws them in a named look and keeps the likeness. That is the keepable object on a dessert table.

Starting points, not a ranking:

  • Watercolour and Sketch when the event is formal, or the family will keep the card
  • Photobooth and Cartoon for friends
  • Anime, Chibi, or Classic Cartoon if that is already her art
  • Royal Portrait when a bit of ceremony matches the dress
  • Retro Halftone or Retro Game for a Sweet 16 that is more sneakers than ballgown
  • Clay 3D, Brick, or Action Figure only if that is her humour, on any Saturday

Full live list: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

Caricature and Bobblehead can feel like a roast at a milestone. Generate them only if she would post that picture herself.

Face Swap is the scene gag. Lucky Leprechaun is the named example. A theatrical pose can fit a quinceañera reception if she is in on it. It is a poor match if you are a distant relative guessing. Do not drop her face onto a saint or a costume she did not choose, just to match a theme. A portrait in a style she likes is enough.

Pet Swap is a friend-group classic (“from the dog”). Use a clear animal photo. It is a weaker front as the only card from an adult guest at a formal quinceañera, unless the family is that household.

Text Swap covers a name and “Feliz quinceañera” or “Happy Sweet 16” when you have no photo. Text-led catalogues may have more headline designs. When you have a picture, use it.

Photos that survive a party

Both events produce terrible uploads: dance-floor darkness, phone flash, crowns, and ten people in one frame.

  • Ask for a daylight picture from the same week, or take one in a doorway before they leave.
  • Crop to her. A court photo will confuse a one-face swap.
  • Glasses on if she wears them. Tiara glare is a real problem; try a frame without it.
  • Makeup-heavy evening shots can still work in Style Swap if the eyes are visible. Face Swap is pickier about the join at the hairline.

If you are making the card before the event, do not wait for the professional album. Use a recent portrait and name the day inside. If you are making it after, as a thank-you, you can use a reception photo if it is sharp.

Words on the inside

For a quinceañera, Spanish, English, or both, depending on how you speak to her. “Feliz quinceañera” is right when you say it. “Happy 15th” is right when you do not. A specific memory beats a paragraph about womanhood you would not say at the table.

For Sweet 16, write like a birthday. Mention the thing she actually cares about this year. Avoid a speech about “sweet” if she would roll her eyes.

US spelling in the message is fine (personalized, color, favorite). Style names stay as they are on the site, including Watercolour.

FAQ

Is a quinceañera the same as a Sweet 16?

No. A quinceañera is a fifteenth-birthday tradition in many Latin American families. Sweet 16 is a US sixteenth-birthday milestone. Use the name they use, and match the formality of the day.

Can I order a posted card to a US address?

Yes. The US shop sends the printed A5 by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, untracked. If the party is sooner, buy the e-card and print or send it in the US.

What style works for a formal quinceañera?

Watercolour, Sketch, or Royal Portrait first. Photobooth if you are a close friend and that matches how you already send pictures. Preview with her parents in mind.

Is Face Swap all right for Sweet 16?

Yes when she would laugh at the scene. Style Swap is the safer guest card if you are not sure.

Can I include the whole court on one card?

Only if every face is large and the preview still looks like them. Otherwise make the card about the birthday person and name the others inside.
