Kids birthday, thank-you, and thinking-of-you cards from a photo

A child’s birthday card should look like that child, not like a stock illustration of a generic six-year-old. On Ottermagic you upload a clear photo, run Style Swap or Face Swap (Pet Swap if the guinea pig is the real celebrity), preview until the likeness clicks, then order a printed A5 card or take the e-card. Printed cards are A5 folded (148×210mm), 330gsm gloss, envelope included and made to order in the UK: posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days, or sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. The same flow covers the quieter cards that follow a party: thank-yous to grandparents, and thinking-of-you notes when a friend is having a long week. The e-card is a hi-res, watermark-free download, ready the moment you pay. Start at Ottermagic.com.

Three occasions, one photo habit

Kids’ photos go stale quickly. A picture from last summer can look like a cousin. Take a new, well-lit, face-on snap the week you make the card. Keep hair in the frame. Avoid the sports-day shot where they are a speck on a field.

Style Swap restyles that photo into a named look. Face Swap puts their face into a finished scene, which children often love and some parents find too much for a thank-you. Pet Swap is for the animal. Text Swap is for a name only, if you should not use a photo, or you do not have one.

Live styles: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

You see a preview before you pay. If they would not recognise themselves, try another photo before you try another shop.

Kids’ birthdays: playful on purpose

Birthdays can take Chibi, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Emoji, Pixel Art, Sticker Sheet, Action Figure, Brick, Clay 3D, and Bobblehead. Photobooth suits a party-hat photo if the eyes are still visible. Retro Game is a gift for the child who talks in console loading screens.

Face Swap earns its place when the template is already a character they would point at. Lucky Leprechaun is the named costume-style example in the live set. Know the child. Some seven-year-olds want to be a figurine. Some would rather a soft Chibi of their actual hoodie.

Royal Portrait can be funny for a “birthday monarch” gag. It can also feel odd if they are shy. Generate it. Keep it only if you laugh with them, not at them.

UK: printed A5 if you have around 3–5 working days before the party. E-card if you remembered on the morning. US: printed A5 if the party is about three weeks or more away; otherwise the e-card, then print locally if you want something on a plate at breakfast.

Inside: use the name they use, not a full legal name they never hear. One specific detail (“the Lego bridge still standing”) beats a generic “have a magical day.”

Thank-you cards after the party

Thank-you cards are where parents stall, because there are six of them and the wrapping paper is still on the floor. Ottermagic helps if you reuse the same good photo.

Ideas that stay kind:

  • Style Swap of the child in Sketch or Watercolour for grandparents who will keep the card.
  • Emoji or Cartoon for school friends, especially if you will send the e-card.
  • Pet Swap “from” the family dog if the gift was for the pet, or if that is the household’s sense of humour.
  • Text Swap with the guest’s name if you have no photo of the guest, which you usually should not use without asking.

Other shops may have deeper text-led thank-you catalogues. That is a fair browse if the card is only a name. If the thank-you should look like the child who had the party, stay on Style Swap.

You can order more than one of the same A5. Check Ottermagic.com for today’s prices. The e-card is the fast path when you need to send six notes tonight.

Thinking-of-you, including for kids

Thinking-of-you is quieter than birthday. A loud Caricature of a child in hospital is usually the wrong object. Sketch, Watercolour, and a gentle Cartoon are safer. Pet Swap of their own animal can land well, because the pet is a comfort, not a joke.

Adults send thinking-of-you cards too: a teacher, a neighbour, a friend whose parent is ill. Use a photo they already like of themselves. Skip Face Swap scenes that look like a party.

If you are unsure a face belongs on the card at all, Text Swap, or a non-photo card from a high-street rack, can be the kinder choice. Ottermagic still offers Text Swap; you are not stuck.

Timing: thinking-of-you often wants to arrive this week. If you do not have 3–5 working days in the UK, or about three weeks for a US address, take the e-card.

Printed A5: 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order in the UK, Royal Mail around 3–5 working days to UK addresses or airmail around 2–3 weeks to US addresses, recyclable stock, water-based inks.

E-card: hi-res, watermark-free download. Default for anyone already late, and the quickest way to reach family far away.

Posters and canvas: available if a birthday portrait should go on a bedroom wall. Check Ottermagic.com for live sizes.

Checkout is in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).

Photos of children that actually work

Children wriggle. Take extras.

  • Crouch so you are not shooting down onto the top of their head.
  • Face the camera. Hair in frame. Hands can be in shot for Style Swap; Face Swap cares more about the face crop.
  • Indoor daylight by a window beats a dark living room.
  • Group shots of a whole class are a poor source for one child’s card.
  • School photos can work if they still look like themselves, and if you are allowed to use them that way.
  • For pets, wait for a still moment. A leap off a sofa will blur.

If the preview looks “almost”, retake. Changing from Cartoon to Anime will not invent a likeness.

A simple order of operations

  1. New photo, this week.
  2. Birthday: try Chibi or Cartoon, plus one Face Swap if they like characters.
  3. Thank-you: reuse the photo; Sketch for relatives, Emoji for friends, Text Swap for names only.
  4. Thinking-of-you: Sketch or Watercolour, or Pet Swap; skip the party figurines.
  5. Choose the printed A5 if the date allows, e-card if it does not.

Preview is the quality gate. Pay only when you would hand it over.

Ready when you are

Make a card that looks like them at this age, not like a catalogue kid. Upload a photo, try Style Swap or Face Swap, and stop when the preview is kind. Print an A5 card (148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope), order a poster or canvas, or take the e-card when you need it today. Start at Ottermagic.com. FAQ

Can I make a kids’ birthday card from a phone photo?

Yes. A clear, recent, well-lit phone photo is the usual input. Face the camera, keep hair in frame, then try Chibi, Cartoon, Emoji, or Brick and preview before you order.

Should I use Face Swap for a thank-you?

Often no. Thank-yous usually want a restyled portrait (Style Swap) or a name (Text Swap). Face Swap into a wild scene can feel like a second birthday gag. Use it when the child would actually enjoy the costume.

Do US families get a posted Ottermagic kids’ card?

Yes. The printed A5 goes by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. If the birthday is closer than that, take the e-card and print or send it locally.

Can the family pet be on a thinking-of-you card?

Yes, via Pet Swap, in a still, simple style. That is often gentler than a party Face Swap of the child.

What if I need ten thank-you cards?

Generate a design you like, then order multiple copies of the A5 or send the e-card several times. Check today’s prices on Ottermagic.com.

What if I do not have a photo of the child?

Use Text Swap with their name, or wait until you can take a picture. If you have a photo, Style Swap or Face Swap will usually make a more keepable front.
