Godmother, godfather, godparent and christening Face Swap and Style Swap cards

Cards for godparents and christenings work when they look like the people in the pew, not like a stock angel with a gap for a name. On Ottermagic you upload a clear photo, run Style Swap or Face Swap, preview until the likeness feels warm, then order a UK A5 or take the e-card. The art should be something you would still show the family in the church doorway. Start at Ottermagic.com.

You might be sending a birthday or thank-you to a godmother, godfather, or godparent, or a card for a christening (or baptism, if that is the word your family uses). The faith context is theirs. The shop’s job is the photo.

A respectful default

You do not need to put anyone’s face onto a sacred figure. A Style Swap of the baby, the parents, the godparent, or the family group is enough. The greeting can sit inside: “With love on your christening”, “Thank you for being her godmother”, the name you actually use.

Style Swap is the mode to open first. Watercolour, Sketch, and Royal Portrait sit comfortably with a keepsake. Photobooth and Cartoon can work for a lively family that already sends funny pictures. Chibi and Anime are a yes for some children and a no in a more formal household. Look at the preview as if a grandparent will see it.

Live styles: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

Face Swap is for a finished scene. Lucky Leprechaun is the named example, and it is the wrong energy for most christenings. Use Face Swap only when the template is clearly a celebration portrait and you know the family likes that humour. Skip costumes of saints, angels-as-gags, or anything you would not hold up at the font.

Pet Swap belongs in some households (the dog who attended every visit) and not in others. Ask yourself if the animal would be welcome in the conversation. If yes, use a clear pet photo.

Text Swap is useful for a name and a short blessing when the only pictures are from a dark church. Text-led catalogues elsewhere may have more ready-made religious headlines. When you have a face, prefer a photo mode on Ottermagic.

Cards for a godmother

Godmother cards are often birthdays, Mother’s Day-adjacent thanks, or a note after she has shown up for years. Use a photo she likes of herself, or a recent picture of her with the child if both faces are clear.

Softer styles first: Watercolour, Sketch, Royal Portrait. Photobooth if your relationship is informal and she would put it on the fridge. Caricature and Bobblehead are a high bar; only if she collects that kind of joke.

Inside, mention one concrete thing she does. “Happy birthday” is polite. “Thank you for the Saturday swimming and the terrible jokes” is a godmother card.

If you are the child, now grown, writing to your godmother, a current photo of you (Style Swap) can be the gift, with the thanks in handwriting.

Cards for a godfather or godparent

Godfather cards have an extra cliché problem because of films. You do not need a Face Swap into a tuxedo scene unless that is already the family joke. Sketch or Classic Cartoon plus his name is cleaner.

“Godparent” is the word some families prefer, including where there is more than one of each, or where the role is held without the gendered title. Write the word they use. The artwork does not need a label on the front.

A pair of godparents can share one card if the photo shows both clearly. Otherwise make two. Do not stretch a one-face Face Swap.

Christening and baptism cards

The photo is often taken on the day: white outfits, stone interiors, flash. Those files are gloomy. If you can, take a doorway picture after the service, or use a clear portrait from the week before and write the christening in the message.

For a card to the child, later, families sometimes want a keepsake of the baby. Style Swap in Watercolour or Sketch is the usual keepable result. Chibi can be sweet and can also look like a toy; check the preview with the parents in mind.

For a card to the parents or the godparents on the day, a family Style Swap is enough. You do not need a church interior in the artwork.

Timing: UK printed A5 is around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail (148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, printed to order, recyclable stock, water-based inks). Christenings get booked, then brought forward. If you are inside that window, buy the e-card (hi-res, watermark-free download) and print it or bring the file. In the US, the same printed A5 is sent by airmail to a US address in about 2–3 weeks; if the service is sooner than that, use the e-card.

Leave the inside blank if you will see them at the service and want to write after. A printed line is fine if the card is going in the post to someone who could not travel.

What to write, and what to leave off

Short beats a copied prayer you do not say. If the family is not religious in practice but is having a christening for tradition, keep the front as people and put whatever words they use inside. If the family is devout, do not undercut that with a Face Swap gag.

Ask how they spell the child’s name. Ask whether they say christening or baptism. Those two checks matter more than picking Tarot Card because the thumbnail looked mystical. Tarot Card is a live style, and it is a poor match for most of these envelopes.

FAQ

Can I put the baby’s face into a religious scene?

You can technically run Face Swap on a scene. For a christening, a Style Swap portrait is usually the kinder object. Avoid anything that turns the child into a sacred figure for a laugh.

What style should I use for a godmother’s birthday?

Watercolour, Sketch, or Royal Portrait first. Photobooth if that matches how you already send pictures. Preview before you pay.

Is this all right for a baptism that is not in a church?

Yes. The photo and the words inside do the work. The style does not need a building.

Can I send a christening card from the US?

Yes. To a US address, order the printed A5 from the US shop and allow about 2–3 weeks for airmail. To a UK address, use the UK/US switch in the site header to order from the UK shop, posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days. If the service is too close for either, buy the e-card and print or send the file.

What if I have no photo of the godparent?

Use Text Swap, or a photo of the child with thanks on the inside. Ask your partner or parent for a picture they already like.
