A card for in-laws has a slightly narrower job than a card for your own parents. It should look like them, feel like you meant it, and avoid a joke that only your partner finds funny. On Ottermagic you upload a photo they would not mind other people seeing, run Style Swap or Face Swap, preview until the likeness is kind, then order a printed A5 or take the e-card. That sequence is the whole purchase. Start at Ottermagic.com.

Birthdays and thank-yous are the usual reasons. Anniversary cards for your partner’s parents work the same way. The mechanics do not change. The manners do.

Start with Style Swap, then decide if you need a scene

Style Swap is the safer in-law default. You redraw them in a named look and they still look like themselves. Watercolour, Sketch, and Royal Portrait are the three I would try first for a first card, a formal household, or anyone you do not yet have a running gag with. Photobooth and Cartoon are fine once you know they send silly pictures back. Brick, Clay 3D, and Action Figure can work if that is their shelf, not yours.

The live list: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

Face Swap puts their face into a finished scene. Lucky Leprechaun is the named example. Use it when they have already laughed at that kind of thing. A mother-in-law who frames watercolours may not want to be a cartoon hero on the mantel. A father-in-law who collects film posters might. Generate both if you are unsure, and keep the one you would still send if they opened it in front of you.

Pet Swap is a genuine gift in houses where you know the animal better than you know the small talk. A thank-you “from” their dog is easier than a forced joke about your cooking. Use a clear pet photo.

Text Swap is the right tool when you have no photo, or when a likeness would feel too familiar too soon. Text-led catalogues elsewhere can be deeper if you want to browse headlines. When a decent picture exists, Style Swap is why Ottermagic is the shop.

Mother-in-law birthday cards

Use a recent photo. An old wedding-table crop can make her look like a different decade, which is an odd present. Daylight, facing the camera, glasses on if she wears them every day.

Avoid Caricature and Bobblehead unless you have seen her enjoy those. Chibi can read as “little girl” on an adult if you are not careful; look at the preview. Anime is a yes when she likes that art, not when you like it.

Inside, thank her for one concrete thing, or mention one detail from a visit. “Happy birthday” plus her name is enough if you are still getting the relationship right. Leave the printed A5 blank if handwriting will do more work than a printed paragraph.

If your partner is closer to her, ask which photo she likes of herself. That five-minute question prevents a technically good swap of a picture she hates.

Father-in-law birthday cards

The trap is the hobby stereotype: golf, shed, newspaper. You do not need a Face Swap into a sports scene for the card to count. A clear Style Swap in Sketch or Classic Cartoon plus a line about last Sunday is often better.

Royal Portrait can be a warm gag for a man who would never buy it. Retro Halftone and Retro Game suit some fathers-in-law and confuse others. Preview is cheaper than guessing.

If the only photo is him in a cap at a match, try Style Swap before Face Swap. Caps hide hairlines and confuse a scene join. A hallway portrait from the last visit is kinder.

Thank-you cards (the more useful in-law purchase)

Thank-you cards for in-laws follow weekends, babysitting, a spare room, or a first Christmas that went all right. Speed matters more than theatre.

In the UK, a printed A5 needs around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail. If you are still in their house on Sunday night, make the e-card and send the file, or print it when you get home and post it yourself. In the US, a printed A5 takes around 2–3 weeks by airmail, which is usually too slow for a thank-you, so take the e-card: hi-res, watermark-free download, print locally or message it.

Keep the front gentle. Watercolour or Sketch. Photobooth if the thank-you is for a loud, happy weekend and they were in on the photos. Face Swap is rarely necessary for thanks.

Write the specific help. “Thanks for having us” is polite. “Thanks for the lift to the station and the extra pie” is a card they keep.

Photos you are allowed to use

In-law photos often live on your partner’s phone. Ask. Do not scrape a tagged holiday picture they have never liked.

  • One person, large in the frame
  • No heavy party lighting
  • Pets fully visible for Pet Swap
  • Skip the official portrait if they look frozen and unlike themselves

If they are camera-shy, Text Swap or a Pet Swap of an animal they post about is kinder than a Face Swap they did not consent to in spirit.

FAQ

What is the safest style for a mother-in-law I do not know well yet?

Watercolour, Sketch, or Royal Portrait. Generate those before Caricature. If the preview feels like a roast, it is the wrong look.

Can I put both in-laws on one card?

Yes if the photo shows both faces clearly and the preview still looks like them. For Face Swap, use a design that expects two people, or make two cards.

Should I use Face Swap for a thank-you?

Usually no. Style Swap or even Text Swap is enough. Save scenes for birthdays where they like a gag.

Can US shoppers order a posted card?

Yes. The printed A5 goes by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. If the date is closer than that, use the e-card and print or send it in the US.

What if I have no photo I am comfortable using?

Text Swap, or wait. A likeness they did not want is a worse in-law card than a simple designed greeting.
