A first Christmas after a wedding, or after someone said yes, is a dated portrait with a bit of story attached. You do not need a studio in fake snow. You need a picture from the year you are actually in, restyled so relatives will keep it. On Ottermagic you upload that photo, run Style Swap or Face Swap, preview until friends would recognise you from across the pub, then order a printed A5 or take the e-card. Printed cards are 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, made to order in the UK, then posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days or sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks.
Family-wide firsts (baby, pet, married as one of four jobs) sit in family, pet, baby’s first, and first Christmas married. First Christmas together under one roof, a new house, and first Christmas as grandparents sit in first Christmas together. This page is a 2026 ideas list for two specific captions: married, and engaged.
Start at Ottermagic.com with the photo you actually like.
Married versus engaged, on the same site
The mechanism is the same. The caption is not.
First Christmas married usually means a new surname on the envelope, a shared tree that is slightly too big, and relatives who want “Mr and Mrs” even if you do not. The photo can be the walk after the wedding breakfast, or December in rented socks. Style Swap of that frame is enough. You do not need a white dress in the picture.
First Christmas engaged is often a ring next to a paper crown, a kitchen, a dog who photobombed the proposal. It is not the same as a Christmas wedding (that is an event card). It is “we are promised, and it is December.” Photobooth and Royal Portrait get used a lot. Watercolour is quieter for parents.
If you got engaged in November and married in a register office in early December, pick the caption you want relatives to repeat, and write it inside. The artwork does not have to argue.
Style Swap restyles the real couple photo. Face Swap drops one or both of you into a finished scene if the faces are clear and face-on. Pet Swap if the relationship came with an animal who should take the credit. Text Swap if every photo is a blur and you still want names on a designed front.
Live styles: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.
Ideas that start with an ordinary photo
You do not need matching pyjamas. These are starting points, not a mandatory set.
The too-small tree. Style Swap in Photobooth or Classic Cartoon. Inside: “Our first Christmas with a tree that does not quite fit. We fit, mostly.”
Coats on a walk. Watercolour or Sketch. Good for sending to parents who would not enjoy Clay 3D.
The kitchen you now share. Brick is unexpectedly decent at rooms. Pixel Art if you both still game. Cartoon if you want colour.
The ring, and two tired faces. Photobooth. Face Swap into a calmer scene only if you have a clean head-and-shoulders crop as well.
Wedding-guest leftovers. A clear couple photo from the day, restyled in Royal Portrait or Watercolour, with a Christmas sentence inside so it does not read as a leftover thank-you card.
The cat who now has two laps. Pet Swap for a card “from” them, or Style Swap of the three of you if all faces (including whiskers) are visible.
Two households, one December. If you are engaged and still packing boxes, say so inside. Style Swap the photo from whichever kitchen you will actually be in on the 25th.
Long-distance engaged. E-card both ways, so it is there the moment you pay. Add a printed A5 for the letterbox that will be opened: around 3–5 working days by Royal Mail in the UK, around three weeks by airmail to the US.
Quiet married Christmas after a loud wedding. Sketch. Short inside. Let the likeness do the work.
Caricature is a maybe. If one of you is sensitive about a feature, skip it. Anime and Chibi suit some couples and feel off in a more formal family. Preview with the person who has to live with the mantel.
Same-sex couples use the same flow. There is no separate “type” of swap. Inclusive Pride-year cards, if you want that register, sit in LGBTQ Pride Style Swap; a first Christmas card does not have to mention Pride unless you want it to.
What to write in 2026 without sounding like a caption generator
Write like you talk. Names help more than adjectives.
Married:
- “First Christmas as husband and wife, still slightly surprised this is allowed.”
- “Our first married Christmas. Love from us and the kettle we now share.”
- “New name on the envelope. Same people. Happy Christmas.”
Engaged:
- “First Christmas engaged. The ring kept going in the washing-up.”
- “We said yes in [month]. We bought a tree in December. Love from both of us.”
- “Happy Christmas from the two of us, pending a seating plan.”
If you do not want the whole address list to know, keep the news for the people you tell in person, and send a Style Swap that is simply the two of you. The front does not have to announce anything.
Leave the A5 blank if handwriting is the gift. Printed insides are useful when one of you has already gone to the in-laws and the card is following by post.
Photos that survive fairy lights and new in-laws
A posed engagement-style shot can work. The useful pictures are usually ordinary: cold noses, cooking, the dog, a slightly ridiculous jumper.
Face the camera for Face Swap. Style Swap can live with a three-quarter angle if both faces are still clear. Hats that hide eyes should come off for one frame.
Group shots at the wedding breakfast: crop to the two of you for Face Swap. Style Swap can keep a couple if both are in focus.

Who these ideas are for
Couples sending to both families. Friends sending to a couple in their first married or engaged December (use a photo you have the right to use). Parents sending to a newly married child. People who got engaged at Christmas and want the card to mark that without pretending it was a Christmas wedding.
If the wedding is at Christmas, that is a different piece: event stationery and save-the-dates are a stationer’s job; Ottermagic is the portrait.
Ready when you are
Mark the first married or engaged Christmas with a card that looks like the two of you. Upload a photo, try Style Swap or Face Swap (Pet Swap if the animal is the story), and order when the preview feels like this year. Print an A5 (148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope; around 3–5 working days in the UK, 2–3 weeks by airmail in the US), look at posters or canvas, or take the e-card. Start at Ottermagic.com. FAQ
We already sent a first Christmas together card last year. Do we need a new one?
Only if you want the married or engaged caption. Last year’s “together” card can stay in a drawer. This year’s photo is a different object if the story changed.
Can we put both of us on a Face Swap card?
Use a design that expects two faces, or Style Swap the couple photo. Do not force two heads into a one-face crop. The preview will tell you.
We got engaged this month and have no decent photo.
Take one facing a window, even a boring one. Photobooth is forgiving of a close grin. Text Swap can carry names if you truly have nothing.
We are in the US.
The US shop sends the printed A5 by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks, so order about three weeks before Christmas. After that, take the e-card (hi-res, watermark-free download) and print or send the file.
Can we hang it?
Yes. Ottermagic offers posters and canvas from the same artwork. Check live details on the site.
