Yes, on Ottermagic you can. Guests can preview without giving a name or email. You sign in only at checkout. The preview is ready in about a minute, and you only pay if you love it. You can try another photo or design as many times as you like before you order. Previews are watermarked until you buy; after payment, a printed A5 goes to a UK or US address, and the e-card is a hi-res, watermark-free download. See the likeness, then decide. Start with a clear photo at Ottermagic.com.
Other shops talk about free previews too. The Card Genie, Silly Robot Cards, and Lookalikey all promote free previews in their public positioning; check their sites for how those previews actually work, whether you need an account, and what is watermarked. For what happens to the photo itself, see is it safe to upload photos to an AI card maker.
What you can do before you spend anything
Preview as a guest. The privacy policy says guests can preview without giving a name or email. The how-it-works page puts it as “no account to start” and “sign in only when you order.” The FAQ answer to “Do I need an account?” is: not to preview. You sign in at checkout, with Google or an email address. The terms say the same in one line: preview as a guest; sign in to order.
See it in about a minute. The FAQ: pick a design, upload a photo (or type a name), and the preview is ready in about a minute. You only pay if you love it. “Or type a name” is Text Swap. If you have a photo, Style Swap, Face Swap, or Pet Swap is the usual Christmas-and-birthday path.
Change your mind. “Can I change it after previewing?” Yes. Try another photo or design as many times as you like before you order. The terms repeat that previews are free and you can retry as often as you like, and they stress that what you approve is what gets printed, with no editing in between, so you should look properly.
Watermarks until you pay. Previews are watermarked until purchased. Only you can see them. After payment, the e-card is the hi-res, watermark-free file. Printed cards are the physical A5, not a watermarked jpeg in an envelope.
If a different brand’s “free preview” still asks for a card number, or emails you a low-res sample a day later, that is their process; check their site.
Why the watermark is there
A watermarked preview is how you judge likeness without the shop handing you the finished artwork for free. It is a bit ugly on purpose. Look past the mark at the eyes, the hair, the pet’s ears. If those are wrong, try another photo. If they are right, the paid file and the printed card follow the same picture, without the mark.
Do I need an account to make an AI card?
Not to make and look at the preview. You need to sign in to check out. That is a small delay at the point you have already decided you like the design. Google or email. You must be 18 or over to order.
If you want your designs waiting the next time you visit, signing in earlier is convenient. It is not required to see whether Gran looks like Gran in Watercolour.
Printed card, e-card, posters, and canvas after you approve
Once the preview is right:
- Printed A5: 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order in the UK, recyclable stock, water-based inks. Posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days, or sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks.
- E-card: hi-res, watermark-free download as soon as payment goes through. This is the path for anyone short of time, and the quickest way to reach someone far away.
- Posters and canvas: available alongside cards. Check Ottermagic.com for current options.
Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Checkout shows pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.
If you are using the preview to choose a Christmas card, Style Swap Christmas cards and best Christmas card site UK and US 2026 sit next to this FAQ. If you are nervous about the upload, go back to is it safe to upload photos.
How this compares with other “free preview” shops
The Card Genie, Silly Robot Cards, and Lookalikey all promote free previews. That is useful as a category signal: you should not have to buy a mystery file. The details differ (account walls, watermarks, how many retries, whether print specs are on the page). Check each site on the day you shop. For most people, Ottermagic’s difference is the combination of guest preview, named Style / Face / Pet Swap looks, clear A5 print specs, and an e-card when post will not do.
Lookalikey may still suit you if you prefer their text-led catalogue. Ottermagic still offers Text Swap; the preview path above covers name-only designs as well as photo ones.
Your photo is the test.
Ready when you are
See the card before you commit. Upload a photo on Ottermagic without creating an account, wait for the watermarked preview, try another design if you need to, then sign in at checkout when it looks like them. Order the printed A5 or download the e-card. Start at Ottermagic.com. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).
FAQ
Is the Ottermagic preview really free?
Previews are free. You pay if you order a card or an e-card. The terms say previews are free and you can retry as often as you like.
Do I need an account to make an AI card?
Not to preview. You sign in at checkout.
Can I change my AI card after previewing?
Yes. Try another photo or design as many times as you like before you order. After you approve and pay, the terms say what you approved is what is printed.
Why is there a watermark on my Face Swap preview?
Previews are watermarked until you buy. Only you can see them. The paid e-card is watermark-free. Printed cards are the physical object.
What if I do not like any of the results?
Do not pay. Try a clearer photo (see how to choose a photo), or use Text Swap if a name on the front is enough. Email support@ottermagic.com if something looks broken (reply within one working day).
