A milestone birthday card has a simple job: they should see themselves at this age, not a generic balloon clip-art. On Ottermagic you upload a recent photo, run Style Swap or Face Swap (Pet Swap if the party is secretly for the dog), preview until it looks like them, then print or download. The printed card is an A5: 148×210mm folded, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order in the UK, posted with Royal Mail to UK addresses in around 3–5 working days or sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. Anyone already late should take the e-card (hi-res, watermark-free download) and print locally or send the file. This guide covers 18, 21, 30, 40, 50, and golden birthdays only.

What counts as a milestone

Eighteen and twenty-one are legal-age parties in a lot of families. Thirty, forty, and fifty are the decades people pretend they are calm about. A golden birthday is the year your age matches the date you were born (turning 21 on the 21st, turning 30 on the 30th). None of those need a special age-gate in the product. You pick a style, you use a photo from this year if you can, you write the number inside.

Later decades (60 through 100) are a different shopping brief and are not covered here.

Style Swap vs Face Swap vs the rest

Style Swap restyles the photo: their actual haircut and jumper, drawn as Clay 3D or Sketch. Use it when the picture already feels like 2026 them.

Face Swap drops their face into a finished scene. Lucky Leprechaun is the costume example. Use it when the joke is the setting, not the snapshot.

Pet Swap if the milestone is “the dog is family” and the human is tired of being photographed.

Text Swap if you truly have no photo. Write the age in the message. If a parent will quietly send you a picture, wait for it.

Live styles to name out loud while you choose: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun.

18th

Eighteen wants energy without looking like a children’s cartoon unless they still like that. Anime, Chibi, Cartoon, Pixel Art, and Retro Game fit a lot of 2026 eighteen-year-olds. Photobooth suits a night-out picture. Sketch is the calmer option for a grandparent to give.

Use a recent photo. A Year 9 portrait on an 18th card feels like a mismatch they will notice. Face Swap costume templates are fun if they asked for fancy dress; skip them if they wanted “grown up, please.”

UK: print the A5 if the party is more than a few working days away. US: print the A5 if the party is about three weeks or more away; otherwise the e-card, then a local print if they want paper.

21st

Twenty-one is still a party, often with a slightly smarter outfit in the photo. Action Figure, Clay 3D, Bobblehead, and Brick make good gag gifts from friends. Royal Portrait and Watercolour from parents who want it on a shelf. Caricature if they can take a joke about the grin.

If 21 is also their golden birthday (born on the 21st), say so inside. The front does not need a tiny “golden” badge; the message can carry it.

30th

Thirty is where people keep the card. Sketch, Watercolour, Classic Cartoon, and Photobooth photograph well on a fridge. Clay 3D and Action Figure still work if they have not become solemn. Avoid treating thirty as a crisis; the likeness is the warmth.

A couple photo can Style Swap as a pair if both faces are clear. Otherwise make two cards.

40th

Forty often gets the “better paper” instinct, which Ottermagic already meets on the printed A5: 330gsm gloss, envelope, recyclable stock, water-based inks. Royal Portrait, Watercolour, Sketch, and Retro Halftone feel considered. Tarot Card is a novelty if they like a bit of theatre. Sticker Sheet if their humour is still loud.

Face Swap into a scene can be the whole present from a sibling. Keep it kind. Forty is not a roasting night unless they booked that themselves.

50th

Fifty can take Royal Portrait seriously, or Bobblehead if that is how the family talks. Watercolour and Sketch suit a gathering where older relatives will look at the mantel. Classic Cartoon and Caricature if they still send memes.

Use a sharp, recent photo. A soft 2012 holiday shot will Style Swap into a slightly wrong decade. Pet Swap the retired racing greyhound if that is the real star of the 50th.

Golden birthdays

The rule is simple: age number = birth date number. Examples: turning 8 on the 8th (usually a child card, still Style Swap), turning 18 on the 18th, 21 on the 21st, 30 on the 30th. Not every adult has one left; 31 on the 31st is the last calendar match.

You do not need a separate “golden” product mode. Pick a style they will keep. Mention gold in the inside message, or in Text Swap if you have no photo. Brick, Royal Portrait, and Watercolour all read as “this one is a keeper”.

If their golden birthday is this week, or less than about three weeks away for a US address, do not wait on the post. Buy the e-card.

Printed A5 vs e-card

Printed A5

  • 148×210mm folded
  • 330gsm gloss
  • envelope included
  • blank inside or printed message
  • printed to order in the UK
  • Royal Mail to UK addresses, typically around 3–5 working days
  • airmail to US addresses, around 2–3 weeks

Order with spare working days before the party. Posters and canvas are available if the portrait should hang in the hallway; check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details.

E-card (last-minute, or anywhere)

Download after payment, watermark-free, hi-res. Print at home, send to a shop, or message the image. Same Style Swap, Face Swap, or Pet Swap.

Photo notes that matter more at milestones

  • Face the camera. Milestone cards get stared at.
  • Match the year. A 50th should look like 50 in 2026, not like a scanned wedding album unless that is the joke and they know it.
  • One subject if you are using Face Swap.
  • Pets: whole head, eyes open.

Preview, then pay. Support: support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day). Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop.

Ready when you are

Upload this year’s photo, try two styles (Sketch and Clay 3D is a useful pair), and order the printed A5 or the e-card when it looks like them at this age. Start at Ottermagic.com.

FAQ

Do you have separate 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th and 50th card ranges?

You use the live styles and write the age in the message. There is no age-lock in the generator. The photo and the number inside do the milestone work.

What is a golden birthday card?

A card for the year they turn the same number as their birth date. Use Style Swap or Face Swap as usual. Say “golden” inside if you want; it is not a hidden SKU.

Can I order these in the US?

Yes. The printed A5 goes by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. If the birthday is closer than that, use the e-card and print or send the file.

Which styles work for a 40th or 50th?

Royal Portrait, Watercolour, Sketch, Retro Halftone, Classic Cartoon. Add Clay 3D or Bobblehead if they would laugh. Try two.

What about 60th to 100th?

Those ages are outside this guide. For 18–50 and golden, you are in the right place.

Can I make one with only their name?

Yes, Text Swap. A photo will still carry more of the person.
