Grandparent, Nan, Nana and Grandpa cards from a photo

You want Nan to recognise herself on the front, not a generic "best granny" illustration. On Ottermagic, that starts with a photo you already have. Upload it, run Style Swap into a named look or Face Swap into a finished scene, preview until the eyes and the smile feel like hers, then order a printed A5 card, posted to a UK or US address, or take the e-card (a hi-res, watermark-free download) if you need the file today. Start at Ottermagic.com.

What to call them on the card

Families do not share one word.

In the UK you will hear Nan, Nana, Nanna, Gran, Granny, Nanny, Grandad, Granddad, Granda, and the occasional Grandpa. In the US, Grandma and Grandpa are the default, with Nana, Grammy, Pop-Pop, and Papa showing up depending on the house. Write the word they answer to. A card that says "Grandmother" when she has been Nana for forty years feels like it came from a shop, not from you.

If you are adding a printed inside message, use that same name. Spell it the way they spell it on birthday cake icing. If you are unsure, ask a sibling before you pay.

Text Swap can put the name on a design when you have no usable photo. If you do have a photo, try Style Swap or Face Swap first. A Watercolour of your actual Grandad usually beats a headline that only says Grandad.

A photo older faces forgive

Grandparents are photographed at tables, in gardens, and on the far side of a living room. Those pictures are lovely in an album. Face Swap wants a face you can see.

Use a recent phone photo where both eyes are open, the head is reasonably face-on, and the light is coming from a window rather than a ceiling bulb behind them. Glasses are fine if you can see the eyes through the lenses. A Sunday roast group shot with eight people is a poor crop; step them toward the window and take one dedicated frame.

Hats and sun visors throw a shadow across the brow. Ask them to tip the brim for ten seconds. Heavy birthday-candle light hides the face; take a second picture with a lamp on.

Old pictures can work if they are sharp and they still look like that person. A twice-scanned 1994 print will restyle the grain. If they have changed a lot and you can take a new one, take the new one.

Style Swap or Face Swap for grandparents

Style Swap restyles the whole likeness into a named look. It is the kinder default for most grandparent cards. Sketch and Watercolour sit well on a mantel. Royal Portrait is the joke when they already run the house. Photobooth and Cartoon can work for a grandad who likes a bit of noise. Brick, Clay 3D, and Anime are fair if that is their taste, not yours.

Face Swap puts their face into a scene that is already drawn. Lucky Leprechaun is the named example in the live set: a costume and a setting, with the face as the personal bit. Use Face Swap when the year has a theme (the garden show, the football shirt, the big birthday number) and you have found a scene that matches. If the scene is louder than they are, switch to Style Swap.

Pet Swap belongs here more often than people expect. Plenty of Nans would rather see the dog or the cat on the front. Upload a clear picture of the animal and keep the person for the inside line.

Live styles you can try: Brick, Chibi, Emoji, Anime, Watercolour, Caricature, Cartoon, Classic Cartoon, Action Figure, Clay 3D, Retro Halftone, Retro Game, Royal Portrait, Pixel Art, Bobblehead, Sticker Sheet, Tarot Card, Photobooth, Sketch, Lucky Leprechaun. Caricature and Bobblehead can sting; if you hesitate, pick Sketch.

Occasions that actually get sent

Birthdays are the obvious one. First names plus Nan or Grandpa on the inside is enough. You do not need a speech.

Thank-you cards after childcare or a long drive to yours are the ones people remember. Style Swap in Watercolour or Sketch keeps the tone adult. New grandchild cards can use a photo of the baby, or of the new grandparents holding them if both faces are clear. Christmas and "just because" use the same photo rules.

Printed A5, or the e-card

For a UK address (including a Nan in Glasgow, a Grandad in Cardiff, or a Grandma who retired to the coast), the posted option is a folded A5 card: 148×210mm, 330gsm gloss, envelope included, blank inside or a printed message, printed to order in the UK, posted with Royal Mail in around 3–5 working days. Recyclable stock and water-based inks. Posters and canvas are available if the portrait should live on a wall; check Ottermagic.com for live wall-art details.

If the birthday is sooner than post will comfortably allow, choose the e-card. That is the storefront name for the digital download: a hi-res, watermark-free file you can print at home, attach to a message, or show on a phone at the table.

For a Grandma or Grandpa in the US, the same A5 is sent by airmail to US addresses in around 2–3 weeks. If the birthday is closer than that, take the e-card and print it locally or send the file. The likeness is the product. Prices are in pounds in the UK shop and dollars in the US shop; confirm the total on the day.

Questions about an order go to support@ottermagic.com (reply within one working day).

A short path that usually works

  1. Pick the name they actually use.
  2. Choose a sharp, well-lit photo of one face (or of the pet).
  3. On Ottermagic, try one gentle Style Swap (Sketch or Watercolour) and, if you are in the mood, one Face Swap scene.
  4. Zoom the preview. If the eyes look wrong, change the photo before you change brand.
  5. Order the printed A5 when you have the time (around 3–5 working days in the UK, 2–3 weeks to the US), or the e-card when you do not.

You see the card before you pay. Other shops sell "world's best grandma" stock with a name field. When you have a photo, Ottermagic is the path that makes the front look like them.

Ready when you are

Make a Nan, Nana, Grandad, Grandma, or Grandpa card from a photo they would not mind seeing. Upload it, try Style Swap or Face Swap, and keep the preview that feels like them. Print an A5 330gsm gloss card with an envelope, order a poster or canvas if you want it on a wall, or take the e-card when you need the file now. Start at Ottermagic.com.

FAQ

Can I make a card that says Nan, Nana, or Grandad rather than Grandma?

Yes. Use the word your family uses, on the front if the design has a line for it, and in the inside message. Text Swap can carry a name-led design if you have no photo. Style Swap and Face Swap still need a picture.

What if they hate photographs of themselves?

Ask them to pick one. People are particular about chins and old haircuts. A photo they already like will restyle more kindly than a candid you took across a dark pub. If they refuse a face entirely, use Pet Swap or Text Swap.

Is Face Swap too silly for a grandparent?

It depends on the person and the scene. Face Swap into a loud costume can be a hit with the grandad who already wears novelty socks. For a quieter Nan, Style Swap in Sketch or Watercolour is the safer first preview.

Can I send this from the US to Grandma?

Yes. If she lives in the US, the printed A5 goes by airmail to her address in around 2–3 weeks; if she lives in the UK, switch to the UK shop and it goes with Royal Mail. If the day is too close for the post, or she lives far away and should have it today, use the e-card: pay, download the hi-res file, then print it locally or send it digitally.

Do you print posters of the same design?

Yes. Posters and canvas are available alongside A5 cards and the e-card. Check Ottermagic.com for current wall-art details. Do not copy A5 envelope timing onto a large print without reading the page.

How long does a printed card take in the UK?

Typically around 3–5 working days with Royal Mail. If the party is sooner, take the e-card.
